New Nickname for Pro Player Chris Gentile

JoeyA

Efren's Mini-Tourn BACKER
Silver Member
Chris "NITRO" Gentile.

When you see or talk to Chris, just ask him, "What's up NITRO?"
He earned that moniker during his trip to New Orleans.

"Katy, bar the door".

Joey...that's not fair. You gotta tell us the story behind the nick...

Good grief, here we go again with the WWE-caliber stupid nicknames.

How about someone's name mean something *all by itself*. You know, when you hear "Willie Mosconi," you equate it with excellence. When you hear of Efren's name (and indeed, that's all you need to say, no "Bata" which noone calls him by anymore, just "Efren") -- folks equate it with excellence.

More marketing fodder for the mindless masses.

Good lord Sean! Get a hold of yourself.

Your anti-marketing chatter is getting in the way of your common sense and some simple fun.

It's merely a nickname and an appropriate one for Chris Gentile. When he hits his high gear, it's higher than anyone would think.

No one is selling anything. Get a hold of yourself, man.

I like the "omigod, Sean's overreacting!" notion, Joey, and is an appropriate sales defense tactic from you.

Yes, you *are* selling something -- a nickname. No, you are not charging for it, but you are marketing it nonetheless.

And my response to this nickname business really has nothing to do with marketing, as you'll find if you do a search on past nickname threads (that you didn't initiate, no less). Rather, it has more to do with the boneheadedness of these nicknames in the first place. It would be one thing if the nicknames had a little background, pertinence, and story behind them. You know: Weenie Beanie, Pots & Pans, The Meatman, Cue Ball Kelly, etc. -- these nicknames had REAL meaning.

But no, we have to suffer through WWE- or American Gladiator-motiffed nicknames like Terminator, RoboCop, Nitro, etc.

Debating is like anything else, Joey. You have to have the right tool for the job. In this case, the only thing you have is the "marketing hammer," so everything from me looks like a nail to you. You try to use the marketing thing against me at every turn. Try getting more tools for your debating toolbox instead of just a hammer.

No hammer Sean. You have a right to say what you want. You say it mostly in a respectful manner and I'm good with that.

You are just getting ridiculous with your anti-marketing rhetoric, especially in this case.

There are dozens of pool players with nicknames that are from left field but this isn't one of them.

"NITRO" has a big story behind it, but until I have permission to tell it, I won't. It's just the way I am.

Your friend,

The only thing ridiculous here, Joey, is your *marketing* rhetoric. It's that old, "for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction" thing. For you to say my anti-marketing rhetoric is ridiculous, you are actually accusing YOURSELF of the same, for your marketing rhetoric. You start this, and I meet it. And I'm not the only one who takes issue with the marketing rhetoric, but I'm probably one of the most vocal.

Like I said, other than the "more marketing fodder for the mindless masses" comment (which was more of a coup de gras than anything else), my post had more to do with the ridiculousness of the nicknames -- not from "left field" as you soft-peddle it, but outright ridiculousness.

Your friend,

If you don't have permission to tell the story of *why* such a silly-sounding American Gladiator-motiffed nickname like "Nitro" would be applicable to Chris Gentile, why then are you lobbying the readership here on these boards to apply it to Chris?

Look, you know I try to be respectful as I can at all times. But like you said, I have a right to express my opinion, no matter who it is -- friend or not. I just think this whole nickname thing -- nicknames with absolutely no applicable story behind them but are merely chosen for their "snap and pop" appeal -- is just Dumb(tm). I think you are layers and layers way above all that.

Your friend as well,
-Sean

Dont worry-no one has ever received a nickname by forum posts.

There is no lobbying the readership here. It's already a done deal.

I was just sharing the nickname with the forum that's all.

You did however, just give me an idea. Perhaps, I will save the NITRO nickname story to share with a livestream audience.

Well, that would be cool (i.e. to tell the story as part of "filler" entertainment during commentary), but why not explain here, where you introduced the new nickname to the masses?

It would go far in helping to explain why such a "dumb-at-first-glance" nickname like "Nitro" actually has a story behind it, rather than "snap and pop" WWE commercialism. (And, to be honest, "Chris 'Nitro' Gentile" doesn't exactly have a nice ring to it, either -- something sounds out of place, or "forced." So it fails on that "snap and pop" front. It needs an explanation.)

I'll second this.

In plain Inglese, we have enough goofy nicknames. I think I'll stick with "Chris".

Eric >wishes there were more cool nicknames

No, you got that wrong. NITRO isn't "forced". NITRO doesn't "sound out of place" for this player and it is very much on the mark. While YOU and Hungarian might want an explanation now, it might be shared at a later date or not.

Until then, you'll just have to be patient. Trust me. It's a good one and so is the name NITRO.

You might as well save it, instead of trying to force feed it to the forum.

I'm guessing that this is the nickname that *YOU* made up for Gentile?
