CJ Wiley's New Blog

If you want to "get this" once and for all do the following: Practice for 2 hours straight, first by hitting ONLY straight in shots and then you can break, take "Ball in Hand" and run out WITHOUT TAKING ANY PRACTICE STROKES...that's right, get down with your cue CLOSE as you can get it {without touching} to the cue ball and take ONE STROKE EACH TIME (playing shape for the next shot as usual)....no matter how uncomfortable this is DO IT ANYWAY for 2 straight hours and report your progress to me here...then I'll tell you the next step
'The Game is the Teacher'

That's how I shoot most of the time & with english. I only take practice strokes for 'touchy' shots when I'm not so sure or I know there is no room for ANY error.

play your best with just ONE practice stroke

I believe you can play your best with just ONE practice stroke, more just "measuring up to" the cue ball. . . Think in terms of watching a great basketball player shoot free throws...do you see them take several practice strokes towards their target OR do you see them measure up with the ball, appearing to "feel the basketball/basket connection"...then make ONE confident delivery to the target....I think Pocket Billiards is very similar.

You just put something into words that I have not been able to explain to someone.

Man, thats a follow thru. Glad you hung onto the cue, no tell'in how far that thing would have gone if you had let go.

I concur. I wish I could do it that way ALL of the time. But occasionally for some reason, porbably some form of DIS-connection I occassionaly take more 'pre-shot' strokes. Also, there is no direct corrolation to making or missing those shots. On second thought, maybe there is, I probably mis those shots a bit more often than I ever mis a single no pre-shot stroke shot. WOW a revalation!
I'm probably not set up on-line for those.

Thank CJ! When I have to 'practice stroke' I need to start over & get down correctly on-line with correct connection.

Thanks again,
Rick

Yeah, I call it feeling the ball (OB or basketball) and the pocket (basketball hoop). This may be what CJ explains as CONNECTING. Correct me if my thinking is not correct

One thing that helps me to gain feel of the OB is to try to slide the OB into the pocket (not hit the OB into the pocket)

Give it a try. You might like it.

Actually in this analogy I'm referring to the Cue Ball as the Basketball and the Object Ball as the HOOP.

Here is one for you CJ.

In softball the ball is pitched underhanded.

In darts the dart is thrown overhanded.

In basketball the ball can be thrown either overhanded or underhanded to strike the target.

The reason I bring this up is the cue can be used either underhanded, overhanded or straight thru the cue ball.

What method of cueing is most often used.

I have often wondered about this. At times I use an underhanded stroke and at other times I use an overhanded stroke and then there are times I shoot straight thru the cue ball.

Thanks for your help

It's amazing how this works IF YOU APPLY IT

It's amazing how this works IF YOU APPLY IT....there's no substitute for going through a 2 HOUR practice session taking NO practice strokes...then play an hour just measuring up and maybe taking one or two if it feels comfortable....I've played some incredible pool after making myself go through this type training.....you will too

I Agree with this statement

I waggle a little left, and right, but take NO forward and backward warmup strokes. I just hold it still, and aim. Then when i am comfortable, i take the full speed stroke. I copied this from SVB, and it requires a lot of confidence, but pays great dividends in confidence building.

This technique seems to get one into the zone VERY quickly.

Just to clarify that is Mr. Wiley's Original post , not mine. I was quoting it

The basketball free throw analogy has always made a lot of sense to players.

This is my original post...The basketball free throw analogy has always made a lot of sense to players.....practice strokes can sometimes hurt your game.
