I would definitely get it. it would be super cool when people look at me with a super ugly cue and say "that guy has a junk cue, he must play awful, we should play him for some money". and it turns out to be the best playing cue, then I might collect a sum![]()
My opinion is the Schon that sits in my case 3 feet away from my keyboard,is the best tool for me,because I've had it for over 20 years now,and I still haven't found anything to replace it that was dramatically better.
The ones I thought were equal or maybe a tad better based on limited exposure were a pretty wide selection of cues.
To me EVERY SS jointed Gus hits good, esp with ivory ferrules. I've only ran across 3 out of 20 or so that I wanted to own based on playability, but even those weren't so much better that I HAD to have it. One of those 3 was a Barry.
I've hit balls with a couple different Schons that were dead-even on playability. Others weren't even close.
I've hit balls with 3 SW that I really liked, and may have eventually loved, but maybe 15 others that felt about the same as a nice McDermott.
A couple Scruggs,2 SS and one piloted ivory that were maybe a hair better due to the shaft quality.
A couple early Cogs, but also felt cues from the same time frame that I'd have traded for a Lucasi based on playability.
Tony Watson's old ivory/turquoise Josey,with ivory joint.
2 different Black Boars.
A Phillippi that was a really nice for early 90's Ginacue tribute. Ivory joint there too.
I really liked a couple mid-90's Bludworths too.
I'm not going to chase cues any more, unless I came into some huge windfall where buying cues just because I felt like it became an option.
I'm instead going to build it's replacement. Tommy D.
I am in possession now of a cue that I believe to be the "holy grail" in my own search for the best hitting cue (for me). I've tried cues ranging the whole gamut from $60 to upwards of $3k in my search for the elusive "one"...
Problem is, my cue is drop-dead-sexy-gorgeous-slap-yo-mama beautiful!!! So, if there truly is a cue that plays better than this one...and it's butt-ugly to boot...well, then $3 is my limit...
Now...if something were to happen to my grail...as in a meteor struck it while in the case (otherwise it's not going anywhere!)...then I would say I would spend way beyond the $3...like $3.98 at least!
This is a fun question...because I believe if I ran across a cue that truly was the best playing cue in world (for me) that was considered "butt-ugly", I wouldn't see it as being ugly...but I suppose that's like saying the cue's got a "great personality"!!!![]()
When I am shooting at the cue ball, I can't see the back end of the cue. So it is performance over looks for me. I have read many posts that say all cues play alike. That is not my experience.

To some folks, Image is everything. How could some cheap cue shoot better than a pretty one?
(tongue in cheek)
How exactly is a rainbow made? How exactly does the sun set? How exactly does a positrack rear end on a Plymouth work? It just does.

sounds almost like my deano cue
i wouldn't think twice about playing with it
if i could make balls go in the hole
i would play it
i have to disagree with you...
my pretty plain 'deano' was sent to a good friend who wanted to try it and lo and behold when it was returned to me it had some Great Ringwork on the collar and shaft; therefore...
my 'deano' is a beauty!
and really Sir, it is a wonderful cue, tks. you did a great job with these cues
all the best,
smokey
Let's see some pics.![]()
