On most shots should I use an open bridge rather than a closed bridge? Are is this just to each his and what each is most comfortable using?

You should use both, or know how to use both. I don't know of anyone that uses an open bridge 100% of the time and visa versa. Use what ever bridge feels comfortable for each shot. If you get down on a shot, and the bridge feels wrong, don't switch whilst you're down. Get back up and start again. Soon enough you won't have to think about what bridge you are going to use, it will just come naturally with no concious decision.

Pidge...Snooker players use an open hand bridge all the time. Pool players usually use both, and as you mentioned, we need to be familiar with, and comfortable using, all five bridges. Good players swap back and forth with no difficulty. I'm about 60% open/40% closed myself. Power strokes should always use a closed bridge, for security.

Good call Scott!

As we well know, all hands are just built a little different. One size does not fit all.

There are general rules for Bridging and here they are:

1. Open hand bridge for top spin. This allows unrestricted sighting down
our shaft. Offers a little less security but with a good stroke who cares.

2. Closed hand bridge for anything at center ball or below.
Usually calls for a higher speed. Gives us a little more stability.

3. I use about 70/30 with open hand getting the nod.

Find your personal balance between the two and use the correct bridge when called for.
