Emotions and Performance

If ask a week ago, I would prabably of said "keep your emotion in check" and that holds true to an extent.
I was in a match this weekend against a lesser player.
The match started out with me selling out the first 2 games racing to 6. He is playing safe with BIH and an open table trying to 3 foul me and is irritating the crap out of me. Well the rolls keep rolling till I am down 4-0 with alternating break and I am irritated when I break and the CB gets kicked in. He then with balls surrounding the 1 fouls me out and I just about explode.I calm myself down but I am fired up. I went from half asleep to wide awake. I never missed another ball and won 6 straight.
If he hadn't fouled me out and woke me up I am positive he could have stold this one. I know better than to play angry but I was definitely border line

FWIW - I always thought the 2nd foul should be used to break out the balls and minimize the chance at the 3rd foul.

I've never heard of someone getting angry because their opponent is trying to 3-foul them. What exactly happened?

It's hard to get going when your opponent is playing safe everytime he goes to the table. Never heard of that? You must play with saints then.... I'm no saint.

i have had those kind of opponents before, i just want to "get it on" and make some balls, run out, not practice my kicks.

Your right but this dude is going to play safe regardless. Makes it hard to go offensive when they play safe anytime there is more than 2 balls on the table.

Emotions are a serious part of playing well, at least in my world. I play in two 8 ball leagues weekly, the ACS and BCAPL as well. I had been playing the best bar box 8 ball of my life. I have been achieving a run out % north of 20% (defined by me as a B & R or running out after someone's dry break) for a combined 25 straight nights. That's a lot of run outs, at least for me any way.

Well, last Thursday, I really could not play. I had originally tried to get out of playing for only the first time in the session. I had a string of bad rolls recently. My wife and I hired a contractor to remodel a garage for us. His results were so poor that we had to fire him 2/3 of the way through and TEAR THE WHOLE THING DOWN AND START OVER! This cost us about $8k. Then the day before Thanksgiving, my beloved lil' brown dog Sadie (beagle/lab mix) started acting funny. Turns out she had three herniated disks that required back surgery. This cost us an additional $3,200 AND cost us our trip to visit family in Houston. Cancelling the trip cost us an additional $150 per ticket. Nice. Our budget is now basically busted and I'm looking at a sustained diet of vienna sausages and ramen. For Chrissakes, I've even had to switch to Natural Light Ice! :help:

Then, as icing on the cake, the day before league last night, I start to feel bad. By the time the league rolled around the next day, I had a fever, chills, and ended up with a sinus infection (which I still have BTW). To make matters worse, I had to play because two of my other teammates saw fit to play in a poker event while watching a GD basketball game. It was either I play or we forfeit a game per round because we had no one else to fill in. By the time I even set foot in the joint (the only pool hall in Lexington, which I hate due to ragged azz equipment, poor environment, etc.), I was steaming and feeling like s$%t. I proceeded to shoot like s$%t too.

After reflecting on all of this, I would have been firm about not playing. BUT, having decided to suck it up and play anyway, I now realize that it was attitutde that lost me those games. In each game, I had an opportunity to win, but failed to do so because my heart was not in the game. I was rushing shots, not taking careful aim, etc. In a nutshell, I had beaten myself before I even began.

Lesson, put absolutely everything out of your mind when you play. If you can not do this, do not play. You will likely have poor results and you will certainly not enjoy the experience.

I know what you mean, totally defensive players irritate me as I'm offence minded and like to run out, if I think I can. But the reality is that there are those people, and we have to deal with them...can't change their game, so I look for ways to improve my own intellectual game and jailbreaks with them and enjoy beating them at their own game if I can.
:p

Time for a bathroom break. Throw some water in your face, walk outside and look at the sky (clouds, stars whatever), Realize just how small we all are in the grand scheme of things. Take a few slow deep breaths. Now walk back inside and kick ass because you feel like it. I've done it many times in different circumstances and it works for me.

I had a buddy pull that on me in league playoffs last season. It worked well, too. He got there early to warm up on the Diamonds, then proceeded to keep me out of a groove and aggravate me. He got me pretty good. They were missing a player and he knew it was his best chance to get points, but they couldn't cover it. My next match was against a Master and instructor and I took it down by shooting at damn near anything on the table. It felt nice to see the balls for a change. He still scolded me a little for banking out, just as he did years ago when I tried to take a lesson. :D

Sometimes they just get on ya and don't let up. :frown:

That's pretty much how it went down.
I meant to punish him and it worked out this time.
I didn't mention it was 9 ball but I figured the 3 foul mention pointed to rotation
