Jimmy please give us your opinion of sighting with ones dominant eye! According to your teaching, basically one set up determines the sighting. I personally (if I remember correctly) would sight which ever way seemed comfortable for the shot after my initial set up. Sometimes left eyed sometimes right eyed and sometimes both eyes over the line.

Aim with your dominant eye. The dominant eye is for sighting. The other eye will assist your game with depth perception and will take some of the strain off your dominant eye.
BEST OF LUCK !!

I'm right handed, left eye dominant. I shoot best when the cue is directly under my chin, so it doesn't seem like I'm favoring my dominant eye.

However, when I'm getting aligned, I'm a little offset with the left side of my body facing the shot.

Does this mean I'm aiming with my dominant left eye, even though I have the cue in between both eyes?

YES this might well be possible!
It depends how tilted your head is beinf over the cue. Just a little will change the position of your cue under your chin. Next thing is if your eyes ( and nose) is perfectly parallel (or right in line over the cue)
You can see this using the "sightright" board.

I have developped a tool that you can put right on you cue
similar and inspired by the magic eye of Joe Tucker (this tool helps more for dual sighted players in my humble opinion)

My product is a little different but shows exaxtly the perfect head position/ cue position under your chin/ if you really hit the cue ball's center and if your stroke was straight when you follow through for players with a dominant eye.
Will be available next year in January or February for around 19 bucks.

Standing upright behind the balls and aiming needs your dominant eye on your sighting line- beeing down in your set position needs your head to be over the cue in the right spot to get the same picture that you had beeing upright. In case your head is tilted a bit when beeing down over the cue, the positon of your eyes/ cue might has to be different due to your head position.

To test this just take a CD hold it in front of you and look through the hole of the CD while aimi g on a target a little away. Now in the holiday time anyone has candles on the table- so look through the hole of the CD and aim on the
wick of the candle (or take the door frame) and see how the positon of your head changes the perception of your dominant eye!!!!

In case you wanna test the sight right board effect just take a book, open it and put it on the pool table with it's
middle right in line with the line at the head spot (or baulk line on a snooker table)
Draw a line along the center of the book and put it in line with the line on the table.

Now go down with your body/head/cue as you are used to do and aim along the book line / table line having you non dominant eye closed and aiming with your dominant eye as long until you happen to see the line of the book beeing perfectly aligned with the line on the table
(perception has to be that both lines become one line/ book line MUST NOT POINT TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT OF THE LINE ON THE TABLE)

You will see that multiple head positions will be possible!
For sure having your dominant eye right on the line but in case your head is tilted a bit or looks a little to the right or left (across the line with your nose) a position with your cue under the center of your chin and having the perfect picture is possible.

Knowing this will change anyone's game to the better and will definitely be an eye opener!

Best luck to all of you!

You can search in google for *SightRight*.

I use this method since years- the method is so old and imo still the best method to get someone in perfect position. Head (with the vision centered how HE SEES the straight line) and his cue must be in perfect position. then the hard work begins.

That s it.

Double Vision

As you know I haven't hit balls except for a bit at Miz a few years ago but really not since the sixties. About a month ago I went to a local room to hit some balls and saw double when trying to aline myself.? When looking at the OB & the CB simultaneously?

I have the same problem due to astigmatism. People always say that I shoot too fast but I have found that the longer Im down over the shot the worse it gets for me. Is it the same for you?

One stroke

Yes when shooting well it was one stroke and in. No astigmatism although I had one that went away over the years as my eyes changed. Only need glasses for reading now instead of old farsightedness.

I have the contacts to correct the double vision but It happens if I stay down on a shot too long.

Yes seeing it as "one line" with your dominant eye and having closed your 2nd non dominant eye is perfect.
Now focus on the cue shaft/ferule too and see if your cues is inine too or getting across the line

KIDD....LISTEN UP! Until recently, I haven't played pool for over three years for almost exactly the reason you cited above...along with no pool rooms that were non-smoking and I had developed a real allergy to smoke.

But we moved, and I was introduced to a TOP eye surgeon who diagnosed me with "double vision" or "Diplopia" which is the scientific name.

With diplopia, you don't necessarily see two FULL versions of an object side by side...although some do.

Instead, the "second object" can be just slightly offset...sometimes called ghost images....either vertically or horizontally. Such vision can just look "blurry" which was the situation in my case. I never complained to eye doctors about double vision...because I didn't HAVE it.

And I passed all the eye tests but only through ONE eye at a time. When using both eyes....BLURRY!

The causes are numerous including head injury, brain swelling or aneurysm, corneal irregularities, dry eyes, cataracts etc.

BUT....and I'm getting to the point. There is another issue called "Strabismus" which is what I HAD....repeat...HAD. In order to not see double, your eyes have to move in PERFECT harmony with each other which requires that TWO sets of muscles...one in each eye...cause your eyeballs to move in an EXACTLY coordinated fashion through their entire range of motion.

Age, and other factors can cause that to no longer happen.

BUT THERE IS A FIX. My eye surgeon referred me to a neuro-opthamologist who put me through a series of tests with PRISMS! By bending the light, your brain is "tricked" and the ghost images go away.

This was a LIFE CHANGING treatment for me. Not only couldn't I play pool but couldn't even go to sporting events or stage shows...unless I sat in the first 10 rows.

So, unless you've already done so, I urgently suggest that you go to an Opthomologist....an MD...not an optomatrist....no disrespect intended.

And ask them to test you for diplopia/strabismus. The FIX (not a cure) is the application of temporary, thin plastic stick-ons to your normal glasses which are manufactured by 3M and wear them for a while. They only cost about 25 bucks.

If they work, then you can have the same prism ground into your normal eye glass lenses...for a small if any extra cost...and your life with change big time.

Good luck.

Eddie...see my post to the Kidd. Astigmatism MAY not be your problem. I am NOT a medical practitioner of any kind but I am suspicious of astigmatism being the issue since you report that your vision changes the longer you are down on the shot.

My WILD GUESS would be that astigmatism (I have it too) is a FIXED disorder that doesn't change during a long gaze.

But the way MUSCLES act CAN AND DOES change over time. Just hold a 5 pound weight with an outstretched arm. (-:

So, I can readily imagine that if you have one weak eye muscle (as I do...and was likely born with but it only got TOO weak a few years ago) then trying to maintain a FIXED GAZE actually causes the muscles to "work" and if you have a weak one, it might well just be "relaxing" due to that work and bingo...."double vision" or in its less drastic form...blurriness.

I would seriously check around for an eye doctor experienced in diagnosing and treating diplopia/strabismus with prisms.

EagleMan

NOTE TO ALL: The "prisms" I refer to are nearly invisible and do NOT make your glasses look as though you're looking through the ends of Coke bottles!

(-:

Your lenses would be exactly the same thickness they've always been.

And they create no vision "side effects"...like halos around lights at night etc. At least not for me.

EagleMan,

That's interseting. I have been diagnosed with an astigmatism. My normal vision is 'fine'. I just passed my drivers license eye test fine. (no glasses) I only use .25 dollar store glasses for reading. However, when playing pool & aiming my 'dominant' right eye with the astigmatism takes over & it's all blurry. I say that I have been playing more by memory than with actual sight. If it gets any worse I'll have to give a contact a try, but I can't even put drops directly into my eyes. I load up a corner & then pry the open.

I'm glad to hear that your problem has been corrected.

Regards,

Regards,

Could be the astigmatism but that can be FIXED with a pair of eyeglasses with the astig correction in just one lens and the other lens no correction.

Problem SOLVED and no contacts required...as long as you don't mind shooting pool with eyeglasses.

But if you go that route...get BIG frames. With the low profile ones, you look through the top portion of the lens when you get down on the shot and that can cause distortion.

Better yet....get a pair of Dr. Gordon Harrison's pool players glasses. I have them and they are GREAT!
