I recently bought an old table from a colleague. He'd had it lying around in his basement for a few years after buying it from Craigslist and never getting around to building it. It's old and some of the pieces seem pretty dried out and fragile. However, I've managed to assemble the base and it feels rock-solid. Yesterday I tackled the 15-piece puzzle that is the wooden frames for the slate bed, trying to match each piece to it's original neighbor without markings, using just a few common screw holes. I'm now in a position to drag the 3 pieces of 1" slate up from the basement to the attic but am wondering if I've reached the end of my talents?
I'm pretty handy and have been an engineer for the last 20+ years and can turn my hand to pretty much anything with a bit of research. However, in researching this subject it seems clear that correctly leveling and matching a 3 piece slate bed isn't for the faint of heart. Should I call in a specialist? And if so, how much is it likely to cost me to finish off the build? Any advice would be appreciated.
Also, I have very few details on the table make and model. It's a very plain design but does have a "Brunswick" shaped recess in one of the rails. I checked out the Brunswick site but can't find a match. Any thoughts on the "actual" make and model or even just an estimate of the age would be interesting. Here are some pictures that might help...
