One-Fifteen is what the fellows call the game here in eastern Tennessee where I shoot billiards every weekday for about 4 or 5 hours.

Standing at the head spot, the 1 ball must be pocketed on the left side of the table in the side pocket and the 15 ball on the right side in the side pocket. The 8 ball is called and pocketed to win. The balls are racked randomly as in regular Eight-Ball with the exception that directly behind the 8 ball on the left is the 1 ball and the right is the 15 ball.

If, after the break, you decide to take a solid ball, you must then shoot solids. Same for stripes.

Is anyone familiar with this game? I never played it until I moved here a couple of years ago. It’s a fun game requiring a lot of strategy and safety play.

Yep at our senior center we play this game daily. We have 1 & 15 on the corners of the rack. You have to make a selection and pocket one of your selection into a pocket before pocketing the 1 or 15. We spot all balls not called and spot a ball for each foul. Playing partners, games can last a long time because of safety play and strategy. I've had quite a time learning this game.
 
Monday is free pool night at one of my favorite bars here in Milwaukee, and this has become the most popular game that night. We sort of re-invented this game with some different rules. First, we don't always use the one and fifteen and generally use two same colored solid stripe balls i.e. 2 and 10. The other rule is that if you pocket one of these in the wrong pocket it gets spotted and you can call this and keep shooting. Obviously you can't do this with a coin table, but with the table open you can.

Why this is not a more popular game is a total mystery to me.

The game you are playing is officially called Alabama 8 ball.
 
Seems pretty popular at the local senior center. Add 'last pocket' as the 8 ball pocket and there's another layer to deal with. (don't leave 1/15 in side till last)

fun game-sort of like golf, with 'take-outs' of threatening 1/15's directly or as part of two way shots.

old guys are crafty and downright devious at times;)
 
Makes you learn the three rail bank to the side pocket real quick. Played this game years ago.---Smitty
