Seeing a lot of people posting videos of their shooting and testing of systems and whatnot on here lately and it got me to wondering if there is anybody on AZ that can actually cue straight through the ball?

Cross strokes, up N down strokes, wavy strokes, cue in the light strokes, gotta wonder if you really know where your striking the cue ball and would I rely upon your feedback as even close to scientific.

Answers on a postage stamp please.

To be fair, if you're including videos that people post to the "Ask the Instructor" subforum, I don't think you're being fair with your comments. These are folks ASKING FOR feedback about their stroke / getting straight through the cue ball.

Concerning some of the videos that you see in the Aiming Conversation subforum, however, I agree to a point with you. On one hand, I really do think the aiming systems' guys are directing too much focus "on the system" and not enough on their fundamentals. But on the other hand, I hope you're not mistaking a demonstrable pivot, with what you think is a "wavy" or "cross" stroke.

"Cue in the light," stroke hooks/hitches, and other telltale signs of "non-committal" to striking the cue ball straight and square are obviously on the mark (on topic), though.

I used to be able to. Then I started reading AZB and I've lost centre ball completely; so much so I've started playing marbles instead, where you can get away with it a bit.

The videos I see leave me speechless and systems are for people that can't play. Pool in America is extraordinary for many non Americans - this site is, too.

I think it's more fundamental than that. The USA has far more serious players than the rest of the world combined, but I see no evidence that it is producing players capable of competing with even the UK, which has 3-400 American pool players at best. If our snooker and marbles players switched to American pool, only SVB would make our top 50, perhaps.

There are BIG problems in your approach to the game, and, judging by what i see on here on a daily basis, these are only worsening. Furthermore, you appear to becoming more entrenched in what you are doing, making the problems even worse.

An inefficient style of play has evolved in America. Time to go back to basics and forget all about the fluff that's hawked here as 'secrets' and the like.
 
A few pros have loopy strokes but strike the cue ball very precisely anyway, busty comes to mind.

But I agree it hurts someone's credibility to promote a system but actually strike the ball like they're spastically freewheeling. It doesn't look careful and methodical (aka systematic), it looks wild and instinctual.

I remember back in the CTE days someone put out a video of them drilling in tough cuts with CTE, from an overhead perspective. But if you looked at the video, they didn't seem to be shooting where they initially lined up, they steered the stick midstroke. So now there's a debate... is CTE only working because the player steers his cue from the wrong line to the right one? Or is it working despite the error?

Before posting video I think players have to be aware of this and make sure they don't end up accidentally shooting their favorite aiming system in the foot.

There are a lot of players looking for that magic bullet, and many saying they have it. The truth is, it doesn't exist.

What does work are learning the basics and working hard to master them.

Many of those looking for a magic bullet paid hundreds of dollars for their cue and case, but won't spend a dime for a lesson that will significantly improve their game.

I have a strong suspicion that people go from aiming system to aiming system...looking for one that works.

The answer is that they all work, but we keep missing shots due to poor fundamentals. But we don't practice the fundamentals enough...too busy chasing aiming systems.
