Help Needed - Value of Meucci 97-5

Hi All,

First post here. Im shopping for a used cue and found on locally.

It's a Meucci 97-5. Seller wants $220 for it.


Based on existing threads, I see that Meucci may not be highly regarded and most recommend to stay away from it.

Is $220 a good price? What should I expect to pay and would there be something else around $200 that would be a better choice?

Ive played on and off for many years but never had my own cue. Recently bought a table for the home and would like a decent cue to go with it.

if im right, this model doesnt have any points or other detail work? it would probably sell new for around 250. i wouldnt say that is a very good deal. you may have some other responses re: a good used cue within that price range. i am not a meucci basher but i still dont think that is the best deal you could find. also, are you simply looking for the best shooting cue or something pretty to hang on the wall?

Thanks! It includes a shaft and a case as well so not sure if I should put any value on that. Does the shaft always cost extra? or does it come with the purchase of a new cue?

I am looking for a good playing cue. Not interested in how it looks yet.

I figured anything will be better than the house cues/Budweiser cues that came with the table.

How about a Joss Sneaky Pete Purple heart? Would that be better than the Meucci?
 
it really boils down to what you prefer to shoot with. i like the shot of the older meucci originals and now play with a custom erwin cue. if you dont know the history of erwin cues, they are closely tied to early meucci cues. anyway, i would suggest trying to shoot with as many different cues as you can and then make a decision. meucci cues have a particular hit that i personally like, but you may or may not. good luck and you will find the right one for you.

$220 is not a good price for you. Great price for the seller though.:grin:
 
another thing to consider is the type of case it comes with. i wouldnt think that a $200 cue would be stored in an expensive case, but you never know. i dont get into cases at all, but i know you can get into some pretty serious money in the high end cases.

It comes with a simple hard case.

I now have a choice of either

Meucci 97-5 for $175 (used but like new)

Joss Sneaky Pete Purple Heart - 150 (New)


What would be the better choice.

Which one feels better to you when you hit a ball?? That's the one you should buy!!

I haven't tried any of the two.

I am able to meet the seller of the Meucci and test the cue out before I make the purchase.

However, I will be unable to test out the Joss.


For those with experience on the Joss, what do you think?
 
Joss all the way! I have never seen the butt cap fly off on a Joss! Meucci I have. Never seen the rings pop out on a Joss! Meucci I have! Meuuci's are way too whippy. People without a stroke like them because they are easy to draw the cue ball with and they think it's cool! Not trying to offend just my opinion!

if the seller of the joss will state its straight together and apart
and no major dings
buy the joss
#1 its new
#2 joss is a well respected cue maker
#3 there must be a reason you get mixed opinions about meuccis
but the opinion about joss is all positive for the most part
p.s. i own 3 joss cues and they all play great and one of them from the late 1980s/early1990s (57 inch) still is straight and plays well
 
Thanks all. I think I'll go with the Joss. It would be a great first cue and gives me some time to decide on my next upgrade.
