Who draws out their design

How many of you cue makers draw out a complete design prior to making a cue and how many just wing it as you go?

I talk with the prospective owner, I check the wood pile, and get the design in my head and maybe... just maybe make a sketch...... then I put it together.

Some cues look planned out and others look like they were just put together.

I am no cuemaker but I certainly like the looks of the cues that are planned out. In addition I like a lot of symetry in cue design and color.

I have done it both ways. But usually just make a rough sketch and go. Add a little here and there if I think it needs it.

I have a legal size sheet printed up of a drawing of a cue. It has a place to record all of the parameters or options on the cue. Everything from joint material and length to what type of butt cap and length and all in between. I also have a binder with pictures of about 1,000, full size inlays that a customer can browse through. Each image has a number so that number and type of material to be used is recorded on the schematic in it's proper place. Once the design is finished and recorded I print a copy for the customer. In this manner there is no room for arguments later as to details as all is on the sheet including purchase price and completion date.
