I guess I don't get it.

For those who don't like pool players, just stay in your holes without poking your heads up and complaining.
When I bought a fast car people started trying to get me to run them at the stoplights. Sometimes i was in the mood for a race, sometimes not. When i was itching to do some racing I'd go to the strip on a test and tune night.
There are "those" guys in most everything. Most human being like a challenge and like to be challenged. That's why there are euchre, pool, chess, scrabble, etc. tournaments out there.
My only complaint about the dying off of pool is the halls closing. Now I have fewer opportunities to play in tourneys, gamble, or test myseld. It's cool if you enjoy playing by yourself or do it for therapeutic reasons. You are still keeping the game alive by buying the products.
Personally, I play because I enjoy the challenge and competition. If I was so good no one could come close to competing with me I'd quit.
The most enjoyable time I ever had playing this game was breaking even with a strong road player who passed through town one night. I don't know if I've played two stronger sets in my life. Sure the money matters but not as much as standing up to a road player while representing my local hall.

No offense but, I don't think anyone said that they don't like 'pool players'.

I'm even okay with 'those' guys because I can handle them one way or another. But 'those' guys can be bad for the pool halls & the image of pool when they hound the novice player right out of the pool hall & he never returns with his friends or his girl friend & her friends because he does not like to be hounded.

Less & less people in the hall & sooner or later it will close. Now here you are telling some to stay in their holes & don't poke their heads out & don't complain & then in nearly the next breath you yourself are complaining about pool halls dying off & closing up.

Just some food for thought about keeping pool halls open for the 'pool players' & 'those' guys.

Regards,

The OP wrote he wasn't fond of other pool players. I believe it was also said that they preferred playing at home which I referred to as their holes.
It's up to room owners to look after their clientele. If a customer is being hounded the
owner should set the offender straight. We had four pool halls in our town close due to no young people coming in to replace the last generation who were starting families, starting new hobbies, etc. not from being hounded to play for money. The two halls that did allow gambling had particular tables that were the action tables. Recreational players didn't get put them until the rooms were full.

"In fact I am starting to feel that I don’t even like other pool players., is what the OP said & he made no mention about playing at home.

But we do not need to nit pick this apart defending ourselves.

Rooms closing is not a good thing for whatever reason & we need to encourage & help anyone that wants to play the game at all 'seriously' to play it at a hall & not just at the local bar room.

We may all be of different sorts here but we are also all pool players of one type or another. We need to stick together as best that we can & help one another as best that we can. That is all that I was trying to do. I was just trying to let the OP know that he is not alone when saying that he guesses he just doesn't get it.

I too don't fully understand why some can't seem to get any enjoyment out of playing unless it involves trying to win soemone's money. Why can't one just beat the other guy until he quits. That's what I usually do when playing for a beer a game. Then I let them leave oweing me beer. Some try to give me money before they leave to pay up but I don't take it. For me it's not about the monetary benefit. It's about playing well enough to win the games.

The OP & I might be a good match up. You & I might not be so. We're all different but we're all pool players.

No harm, no foul... I hope.

No harm or foul sir. I mistook the comment about preferring to play by or against himself as playing at home.
Last time I was in Tucson I managed to hit balls for five minutes before I was approached by someone wanting to gamble. I can see that bothering some folks but it was exactly what I had hoped to find. Different strokes...

See... you know how to do it.

You don't go bothering people & making them tell you no 2 or 3 times.

You wait til they come to you to get what you want.

You're a good man...

Cutting down on some of the knocking would be pretty helpful to the overall health of the game. Maybe bring enforcers into the poolrooms so they can smack around people who get out of line, re-establish the old poolroom hierarchy code. Seriously though, maybe pool really just needs to purge the haters.

Seems so many people hate poolplayers on this pool forum. Appears to me that, for a lot of people, if they don't play as good as Shane they make the excuse that it is only because poolplayers are pieces of shit. If they were a piece of shit, and played pool all the time, then they would probably be even better than Shane. Some people think some of the pros just don't like weak players because the pros are just primadonnas or something. In many cases, the weaker players promotes the POS analogy. All of that just discounts the work the pro did to get to that point. If I was a pro I would get sick really quick of every lazy shooter who doesn't want to put in the work to learn how to draw the cueball tell me how pool is so easy and how good they would be only if.

In my mind, the best thing for pool is a bunch of mega-millionaire gamblers who decide they love pool and gambling on matches. That would give players something to practice for as we all have seen with a few over the years. Imagine if there were a bunch. Pool would thrive. At least the backroom type stuff. Other than that, DCC, SC, SBE, etc are all great but that stuff gets expensive really quick with money and time restrictions for most people. Since noone should hold their breath for a bunch of Roseys getting into pool, I am all in for purging the haters, knockers, and the like. The "players" will still get games, the dedicated will still practice hard, and they will all know what is going on with the other games and players around the country....just like they used to.

Mike, you're closer than you think to reality. There is a culture of wealthy pool players. They keep to themselves. They play in the billiard rooms in their private clubs and even have leagues against other private clubs. Many of them have built incredibly beautiful billiard rooms in their multimillion dollar homes and penthouse apartments. I've seen lots of them.

Many upscale pool rooms have tried to lure them to their establishments. Some have been fairly successful getting them into their poolrooms, but at the end of the day, these players prefer the company of their peers.

Now with today's technology, like live streaming and youtube, they can separate themselves even more from our community. They don't even have to step out of their environment to watch good matches.

I've been teaching many of them for years and trying to get them to integrate into our billiard community. They're just not interested, and sometimes I don't blame them.

Have you ever seen how the sharks converge on a well-dressed person who enters a pool room? They literally climb over one another to get to them.
