This question is for people who play regional Tournaments. I am talking about the ones you sign-up for less than a week before, or you just sign-up that day when you show up to play.
ON A SCALE OF 1-10, How good do you have to be (in your own mind) in order to play WELL ?

Well if you dont think your going to play well when you sign up then I can probably tell you right now how it's going to go.

A re-explanation

TRUE.
Perhaps I didn't word this correctly. YES, you know how good you are, and have the expectation of playing that caliber. WHAT I MEANT by the 1-10 scale is how well do you feel you need to play in order to have a real fighting chance to win in a single elimination tournament with a field of 64 + players. (you are going to go 5 rounds to get into the finals)

Personally, I'd say I have to be a 7, meaning given the field of players, it my performance drops (for whatever reason,..... fundamental flaw, mental mistakes).
There are times I will not play in leagues because my play is "lousy" for an unknown reason(to me at the time). We all have days like that. How bad does it have to be before you figure it will catch up to you in a tournament?

If indeed you are below a "5" , then you would have less than a 50/50 shot from at the start of match 1 . (ie: you are donating, not "in it to win it")

Yes I gotcha, mostly just saying you need to be confident up front.

But honestly, in my experience, tourneys are a different beast. League, money, casual player etc are all wild cards in tournies. I've seen them all play in both directions in tournies so it's hard to assume anything about the field outside of the other regular tourney guys.

I'm no A player anymore by any stretch but theres not many tournies I don't think I have at least an outside shot at the money. I try not to worry too much about the field, that just makes me doubt myself. Not good.

In regional handicapped tournaments, I always assume I have to play (on average) 1/2 handicap above my class to win. So if I'm rated as an A, I assume I have to play consistently A+ speed on that day to win the tournament.

When you get late in the field, there are going to be a few players playing above their level. So you also have to be there to have a shot against them.

Pool balls aren't crystal balls.
Sometimes ya just gotta play.

If everybody over-thought the situation....
...they would just hand over their entry fees to the best player.....
..however, if a player is 2/1 favorite every match....
...he's an under-dog to win a 64 man tournament.
