I read that the pockets at steinways was 5.1 inches on gc3! My table is a gc3 with pockets shimmed to 4 and 3/8! I know its better for my game with the tighter pockets bit ive been getting crazy with straight pool running 30-40 everyday and hitting a couple of 50-60! Should I open mine up to say 4 and 5/8 to 4 and 3/4? I want to run a few balls and I'm never gonna make a decent run! I did ask this question a few days ago but after seeing the specs at steinways, I'm really thinking hard on this one, I'm not tus good,maybe B to B+, but now, I'm going nuts over the pocket size of my table!

4.5" is a good tight size to play on, anything less is mostly for drills, not a lot of fun to play on smaller pockets unless someone just want to show off by saying how small the pockets are.
I've been playing on 4" Diamonds lately & I would agree with you.
That 1/2" makes the game more playable not just in the sense for pocketing balls but for playing to a side of a pocket for position reasons.

Though 60 is a decent straight pool run, and right on track for your skill level it sounds like.
I always felt small pockets were just a macho thing anyway.
Some guys act like "I already play at such a high level that normal pool is just too easy for me and I get bored.
I need special equipment to test myself because on normal equipment I never miss."
That might be true for like 4 dudes on earth but for the rest of us,
standard pockets give all the challenge you'll ever need.
For straight pool especially I believe larger pockets are the way the game is meant to be played.
It's not a long shooting contest. It's a game of tight position and using pocket cheat for all those short
shots lets you keep the cue ball on a leash. It sucks rolling 4 inches off, which can happen to anyone
on good simonis, and being forced to play an entirely different pattern that screws up the run.
Straight pool doesn't feel good on a "9-ball table".

Yeah, I'm gonna open them up! Not sure how much yet, I heard that at steinways they had them at 5.1! I don't think I'm goin that big but I'm thinking 4 and 3/4! It seems most of the time I need that slight wiggle room for the position!
