I have a dumb question..IM trying to modify my enco lathe to do shaft and butt tapering and ring billets and points. I figured out the taper bar set up already.. But, I cant figure out how to set up the lathe to do a ring billet using auto feed, with out the spindle turning..Am I missing something really stupid?
Tks

do you have indexing? Lock the index, cut a slot, turn it X number of holes, lock it, cut a slot, repeat small cuts and turn until finished? Maybe I'm missing something. Does the headstock have to turn for autofeed to work? If so, maybe you have to hand crank them with that machine.

The lead screw is turning from the gearing in the headstock. You would have to disengage it, then connect a variable speed motor to the leadscrew to move the carriage. A mill would work better.

how do I engage the auto carriage feed without the spindle turning..Of course I can manually run the carriage right and left with the handle wheel, but, I would assume one would want to use the auto feed system to do that..
