How do you get out of a slump

One time I went through months of slump, I can't remember winning more than one match. I remember losing without winning a single game. Then it all suddenly changed and, before I knew it, I was playing better than ever. I took on players who used to make me look like a dumb cripple during my slump and defeated them regularly. Maybe it had something to do with my full body techniques I discovered then, but I feel that most of it was due to my subconcious mind and my confidence which greatly improved back then, especially after that discovery. My advice would be to have patience, or maybe try experimenting with new techniques. Do something to surprise your own brain. I wish you luck :-)

It has nothing to do with your subconscious because you cannot control it. Once you unlock the secret to pocketing balls consistently, you will never go to slump due to missing balls. Pool at high level is not about pocketing balls, it is about position play, brain power is needed to play most efficient pattern such that each shot lines up with minimal cut angle so missing balls is not even on the mind, it is called pool experience, then if you slump it would be due to bad luck and bad roles, which unfortunately help your opponent 99% of the time.

Anatomy of a Slump

The problem with result based expectations is that of the perceived "slump". However, most pool players are FOOLED BY RANDOMNESS. In my opinion there is no such thing as a slump. Just your game going through it's natural percentages. The winning and the losing is very much out of our control. We control our bodies and nothing else. Don't be FOOLED BY RANDOMNESS. The randomness of the difficulty of the first shot, the randomness of the break, the randomness of the 8-Ball layout, etc...Very often players believe they are winning because they are shooting well and losing because they are shooting poorly. Very often this is not the case. You must pay attention to why you win and lose. Forget about the slump, get it out of your vocabulary, just play pool and the percentages will work themselves through.

I am looking for advice on how to work through a slump. I have tried practicing more, playing in more tournaments, taking a week off from pool and everytime i play a match in league i lose. Last session I only lost once, the session before that I went undefeated. But now im losing and cant stop. any suggestions?

Very simple.

Learn something new!

Is that an invite Ken? :D
I can tell you what NOT to do when in a slump. Don't play one pocket with some guy with a case full of Szamboti's!

Try gambling in a ring game.

One of the deals I think gets people in slumps is one pocket (exclusively) and matches where you play alot of defense.

I tell you when you HAVE to MAKE the shot or it will cost you money you WILL bear down and focus.

Treat the slump like the boogie man...refusing to acknowledge that it's real, ...and you'll never enter another one. The boogie man can't get you if you don't believe in him.

slumps happen in all sports

I have seen some players think they were ok and just get lucky alot.
I personally dont believe in slumps. I believe this game is learning experience that forever changes. There is one key situation in every game, its not about who won or lost, it is about how you react to the key sitiuation. Sometimes maybe when you do something wrong you win, but in the long run you will loose. It is kinda like the guy that always crashes in 9 ball and he wins the tournament the first time he plays, well guess what he is never going to win another in long long time. I am just thinking about how i can play him for some cash he just won.

Slumps are not something to think about but situations are.
