I don 't own a Southwest, I have owned a Southwest, not built for me, and I will own a Southwest , being turned now. My question is Southwest other than a few nay sayers seem to be highly regarded for playability. Other than a small number of Southwest cues they are relatively unadorned. As far as I can tell the only metal in the cues appeares to be the pin and maybe in some a weight bolt how ever I doubt that. Do any of you here believe that the lack of adornment inlays, metal rings etc is the reason that a majority of shooters believe them to be an excellent playing cue?
 
I have heard in theory that a high quality solid one piece cue would play the best. Kinda makes sense to me but I'm no expert.
 
I know that was Jerry's feeling,I spoke with him about ordering a cue in 1986 with stainless rings and he told me that they did not put any metal inlays or rings in the cue because they felt it degraded the playability of the cues.
 
i dont know why many people love them, i for one am not a fan. i think they feel like tree tunks.. but thats just me.. could be the one i shot with.. it felt very thick and had a dull "thud" type of feel to it..

with that being said.. there are many people who would pick up that same cue and love it.. to each his own i guess...


and as far as looks go, there are some color combo's that i really like.. and many that i dont.. i wish they would do something outside of the box for once,,

Southwest changes the internal threaded rods used to join the handle to the forearm, and the butt sleeve to the handle. They change them by varying the material used and the rod diameters to balance the cue. Ive taken X-rays of every one I have, and none of the 4 are the same. Safe to assume steel, aluminum, titanium, possibly brass, and Im sure one I have has some man-made material, I assume to be G10.

This is required obviously due to varying weights of woods used....to end up at a certain weight and balance point.

EDIT: Forgot..the length of the all threads also vary...

Most definitely, yes.
 
That's interesting that they alternate the pin material and length to adjust for weight and balence. It makes sense how ever I hadn't really given it much thought.
