1 o'clock or maybe 12 o'clock english on white ball hit thin on right side of yellow ball, white ball will go long short long rail to red ball or maybe to another short rail then to red ball, if you miss you still play defense ;)

!/3 hit off left yellow using high english, NO side english, short long short dropping in behind red--- moderate stroke slow ball speed!. No kiss! And you are left with good position! Sometimes the easy solution is the best! Will Marco agree?

Well, Steve, you picked a fairly thorny one. With the balls (more or less) lined up on the diagonal, with the cue ball in the middle, the precise positions dictate what is even possible -- move any one ball by an inch and it might be a whole new ballgame.

First of all, both object balls are on or very near the kiss line. So, for example, bbb's shot is an almost sure kiss. (Aside: twice around the table with that thin hit is a definite possibility.)

Late in the game when defense may be an important consideration, Dan's shot is the stand-out choice.

Three other shots that I see, are:
1. Similar to bbb's, but straight through the first ball. there should be no kiss with a very full hit, and by fine tuning the english, the shot can be made either long or short.
2. Off the right side of red L-S-L-L and the white is fairly large. Note that the same shot off yellow (as suggested by KycU) is a much harder kiss to beat, whereas the angle to red makes the kiss avoidable. Also, KycU's shot requires a thinner hit sending the yellow toward the red to join in the fun.
3. Top long cushion first with 9 o'clock english hitting the yellow toward the lower left corner, then the cue ball hits the end rail second and the third cushion needs to be picked up near the red.

What if he plays a tickie off the bottom long rail...then off red...three rails to yellow

With the red that far from the long cushion, I would be worried about going too short. Hence, I would need to take some of the english off, and that makes the shot much tougher to judge. However, that certainly is another possible shot.

Several years ago Bob Byrne and I had a long discussion about these "diagonal" positions with an eye to his writing a column. In the end he decided that because of the sensitivity to exact ball positions, and because of the myriad possibilities, the topic was too technical for a mass audience.

How about this one as a Blomdahl-style solution:

Or how about: shoot to the end rail behind yellow about 1 1/2 diamonds from the corner with maximum right english, hit the yellow thin trying to go to the top long cushion almost 2 diamonds from the corner, get two more rails before hitting red.

I remember Martin Horn tried this pattern against Jaspers, but he hit yellow slightly too full and caught red on the way in.

Hey mark, if i play that shot it will be no kiss at all, yellow ball will hit short rail first then go to left corner, but i think it possible marco will play on red L-S-L-L and possible S-L in the corner with no english with speed and control of the red ball he will beat the kiss.
