Glue Down Question

I have a question for the mechanics using the glue down method for Simonis cloth installation. I have glued down my sides and am now going to close out my side pockets but I notice the glue has seeped through the cloth and stained it along the side edges of the slate. For this reason I am hesitant to do the side pockets where the glued edge will be visible when looking into the pocket.

Not that it should matter but this is a 9' Diamond Professional with Simonis 860HR. Perhaps I am applying too much glue to the cloth side? I am brushing it instead of rolling it because I find I have more control and less waste, although it is slower.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Steve

The glue can and will separate if it sits in can for a while, I use a long 1/4 wood dowel to stir the glue for at least 5 mins or so, and make sure to stir the thick stuff sitting on the bottom of the can real well.

A fresh can of glue will be thin in consistency, I've always used a cardboard box flattened out as a glue/paint tray, work the glue with the roller to thicken it up on tray and prepair for application. Low pressure on the roller is a helper to prevent bleeding thru.
I've never used a brush to apply scothweld to cloth, perhaps RKC can elaborate more on the subject.

My biggest helper would be to use less pressure on application.
Just about everyone here has used the glue, others might have more insight than I on the stank stuff.

I noticed the same thing as you did using the roller, I guess it sucks trying to do it when you are not a Pro, but mine did turn out better than other local tables that were done by alleged Pro/installers.
Anyhoo, I used one of those 1 1/2" wide foam brush/pads to apply glue, it worked real well and they are cheap.

First, I'm not a mechanic, I cover my own tables at Steve's ... on my Valleys I use a lighter roll on the cloth where its exposed at the pockets and brush to bleed-through where it wraps underneath the slate. I don't know if you can do that with a Diamond.

Don't use as much glue and it won't seep through the cloth, all you need to do is lightly apply the glue to the fibers of the cloth with a thin film of glue. The FB10 is the only glue I use for the bed cloth...including the pockets as it'll never fail and come loose.

your paniting it on too thick

your painting the glue on way too thick with the brush technique that is why we roll it so you can go quickly over the cloth and the glue is picked up on the little fibre hairs instead of soaking into the cloth.

You can make the same mistake with the roller method if you go too slow or have the roller too loaded with glue . quick passes with the roller and I was able cut my glue usage in half from when i started

good luck

Thanks for all of the feedback. I applied the glue much thinner with great results. I also found the tip regarding stirring it very well to be useful, after a good stir it seemed less likely to bleed through.

This forum is great! Thanks again.
