2014 Asian Games Drop Cue Sports

In case anyone else here in the USA missed the news, the 2014 Asian Games, the largest sporting event in Asia, decided to drop all cue sports from their schedule for the 2014 Games in Incheon, South Korea.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) decided that the eight non-Olympic sports in the 2014 competition would be baseball, ten-pin bowling, cricket, kabaddi, karate, sepak takraw, squash and wushu. This resulted in roller sport, chess, cue sports, softball, dancesport and dragon boat being dropped from the list.

These competitions have been an important part of billiards competition for some time now, and I am very disappointed in the OCA's decision.

If this has been previously posted, my apologies for reposting. I was researching a billiard-based vacation where I will spend quite a bit of money, but now, I will most certainly spend it somewhere other than in Incheon.

It seems, as Earl Strickland said in his Sky Sports Interview, Pool is dying. Earl seems to be very angry about it, and many of the rest of us are as well. But being angry won't stop this trend. Read AZ's 2013 year-end summary and see where our sport is heading. It may just shock you. Let's embrace what we do have and appreciate those individuals that promote our Sport.

I believe there is also an Asian Indoor. Games, but I may be wrong.

If you're planning a trip to Korea for billiards, skip Incheon, and go to Seoul or one of the other big cities. Billiard halls are everywhere in Seoul. Not all of them are pool halls, or even have any pool tables, though. If the sign only has three balls on it, it's billiards.

Can't believe they chose a nonsensical game like cricket over pool, though.

A previouis British influence, I guess. :)

As a post note, I don't think the Asian Games and the Southeast Asian Games are the same thing, but I would love to hear from someone more knowledgeable on the topic. Where will the 2014 SEA Games be held, and when?

Asian games and SEA games are different. SEA games only involve South East Asian countries (Philippines, Vietnam, SIngapore, INdonesia, Malaysia, Laos... etc)

Asian Games involve all the other countries in Asia.

leto1776 is correct, pool had been just moved from Asian Games program to Asian Indoor Games. It really doesn't change much, I don't know how more valuable and honorable Asian Games titles are than those of Indoor Games, but we should accept pool and billiards will probably never be part of any Games which are held every four years (Olympics, Asian...). Good they are in World Games still. That's our fate.
