How to gauge interest in local small pool tournament

Hello.

I have been asked to start hosting weekly or every other weekly pool tournaments in our local town pool hall.

We haven't had any interest in tournaments for more than a year. Simply because we don't have enough players who would show up.

Now, some younger players have asked why there are no tournaments, and the owner of the club contacted me and asked if I could start running them.

I would very much like that, but there are some problems.

[*]Simply not enough players in a town of ~45000 people

[*]The players that used to play pool, have no interest in tournaments, or actually, in pool. They prefer poker

[*]The younger group of players are not even close up to bar with competing, for example, against me and a handful of other players who will be taking part in the tournaments.

I and others who play regulary are not A players by any means, but we can still break and run out a rack or two in a race to 11, for example.

I believe the owner is not going to be seeking to make money off of the tournaments.

What would be the suggestions you'd make to the owner? I have a meeting with him in a few hours.

For example, entry fee? Prizes - 1/2 of tournament pot cash between 1-3 and free playing hours credit?
How to promote tournaments except facebook? I belive I could promote it at the local college... What else?

How to find and negotiate local small businesses into being sponsors? For example, local pizza place could offer a pizza as a first place prize? But why would they do it? Name the tournament after them?

I have ideas like those but I need more.

How to make the newer players keep coming back after they get whitewashed 0-3 the first time?

One possibility is a handicap system, but that wont work I think, anyway. It's really difficult to assign handicaps, and there will always be arguments etc.

Please, some ideas would really be appreciated.

Thank you!

Find out what expectations the owner has and what he/she is offering.

Some balk at added money, but have no problems offering free table time.

Do you want this to be skill based or more luck. For widest initial participant, keep the races short so anyone will have a chance. 8-ball over 9-ball.

First of all, a town of 45,000 is sufficient for a tournament. I do it in a town of 17,000!

Here are a few ideas:

A blind draw scotch doubles tournament. This type of even can be a great way to get entry level players involved. It takes a lot of the pressure off and promotes a more social environment.

A handicapped tournament. This may attract some of the lower level players because they will feel that they have a chance to compete with the better ones.

If there is a billiards supply store in your area ask them if they would be willing to donate a cue or two to be used as a prize to the top finishers in addition to the cash. Sometimes the pool hall owner is willing to donate a cue for this, sometimes not. If it spurs new interest and brings in new customers it is to their benefit.

Another great way to get people involved is to donate a portion of the proceeds to a cause; breast cancer, make a wish foundation, childrens hospital are a few of the ones that I have done. You will have people that don't even play pool show up just to support a cause that they believe in. And as a added benefit you get to be a part of helping someone else out as well as generate interest in pool.

Drink/food specials for the players.

Table time vouchers. I talked the owner into giving a voucher for 3 free hours of table time for every entry in the tournament.

If I come up with some others I will let you know.

I like the blind scotch doubles idea. 8 ball line tournaments are great too because no matter what you get you set number of games in (great for beginners)

I would be happy to design some flyers up for you and you just have to print them out and put them up...these are the flyers I did for my little tourney (I cut the bottom part off with all the contact info for posting here)
