Cue maker lists

I completely understand this way of doing things. The only thing I liked better than getting my first custom order, was finishing my last custom order. When you do this as a hobby. There was nothing worse than having cues i wanted to build, but having to build cues I had to build.

I was informed last night about how Jake Hulsey handles his list and I consider it to be brilliant.

You can get in line and when your number comes up at the top you will be offered the cue he has finished and you can pass on it and stay at the top of the line. I think that this is a fair way to do it and allows Jake to build what he wants and insures he always has a buyer. This to me is the sign of a true artist who also has figured out a way to handle the business side of it without becoming a slave to orders.

Being as creative as Jake is I would think not many people pass on the opportunity to own one.

Jake's latest masterpiece above is in contention for Cue of the Year.

Go here to see some amazing cue art and if you are as inspired by Jake's work as I am then vote for his cue. - disclaimer - I don't own a Hulsey and have zero plans to get on his list or try to own one. I simply like the work I have seen from him so far and consider him to possibly be the most creative maker in the business at this point - top five for sure.

i think there is a difference between artists who paint pictures for you to buy and cue makers who make a cue for you
i want to have a cue made to my specs
not buy what the cue maker wants me to buy
so jakes model is not one i would seek if i wanted a cue

Well that's part of the beauty of Jakes way . Your not obligated to buy what he makes . If you don't like it just pass and wait for the next one.

I miss a lot of emails. That's also part of being a slave to orders. Its not good service for sure.

I started the list with my quality of life in mind. If theres a buyer for a cue then thats a bonus. By that point my mission has already been accomplished because i've enjoyed myself up to that point.

To Rig & Bav....Some of my favorite cues in the world are in the same style that you guys prefer. I do this for fun so i probably would have quit after the first six months of builiding that type of cue. "think about how the guys who have been doing that for 20 years feel" I'm guessing you have never thought about it. Rig, the guys you tout wish you the customer would allow a little freedom. Some wish they would have taken my stance as they are now cornered into the type of cue "the customer" prefers. Unfortunately some of them will never get to see what true talent they have even though there already famous so to speak.

The bottom line in my case is that if i built the traditional cue, i'd be lost in the crowd and nobody would even know my name. I'd also only be aiding in muddying the waters and killing the already dying cue collecting world.

Does he weed out the flippers ?

I'm actually pretty selective and do some research before i say yes. I know and respect several guys who are in this for profit or there enjoyment of buying and selling. I dont mind the guys who are going to rep well and fair.

With that being said, i'd rather build cues "even if at a reduced rate" for folks who i know are going to appreciate and enjoy the cue. If it looks like the only reason there interested is for hitting a lick off the new kid on the block then i try to pass.

your creativity comes through in the designs of your cues and high quality of your craftsmanship
and your creativity comes through in how you decided to sell them
