Earl in the booth

I just watched the 25th Annual Ocean State 9-ball final on youtube between Dechaine and Shaw. Around the fourth game or so Earl started doing commentary with Joe Tucker. I really liked hearing what he had to say and how he said it. Putting it out there in case people haven't heard him commentate.

Could not agree more. It's insightful and informed. Proper expert opinion about shot selection, strategy and the players themselves.

Excellent excellent excellent

If one had the pleasure of listening to the Camel Pro series events where an actual professional commentator Tommy (who knew zip about pool) helped do commentary/production with various pro players, this model was very engaging and professional. It's was ''so'' refreshing to have someone in the booth that knows very little about the match (like 99% of the public viewers), but asks or states the dumb questions to help educate the audience and themselves. Given time, a pro commentator evolves and becomes better each production.
Mikaela Tabb?? the men's professional women referee has got a LOT of respect, I'm sure she went thru issues at the beginning, but has turned out to be a class act and good for the game.

Ed ya never know, get on the mic, you may be heads above us all, I'm not being a smart ass. American idol, they never know who will rise to the top, even the singers themselves have no clue, the public/audience are the true litmus test in life.

I was there during the tournament so of course missed all the commentary. Thanks for the link, I'll watch it again with commentary.

As others have said, when Earl is not playing, he's a lot easier to listen and speak to, his commentary is often good and he even makes fun of himself during it.

I'd rather have 60% stories and chat between the commentators while there is nothing special going on at the table. Lots of fun things were revealed in commentary about gambling matches, stories about players, etc...

Most people that watch pool know when they are going to hit a low right spin shot 2 rails for shape, we don't need someone telling us that they are about to do that.

Nice listening to Earl's commentary in this match.

Does anyone have other Earl commentary examples?

The key is to have a professional commentator (as Island Drive mentioned) along with a professional pool player. The commentator might not know about low-right spin, but he knows how to keep the pace and conversation going. He knows what questions to ask the pro and when to ask them; shot selection during a run-out, gambling stories between rack.

Otherwise, most pros end up telling us all the excuses why they lost their last match.

Comparatively....

How much would we enjoying listening to an NFL Monday Night production with Terrell Owens and a defensive lineman as the only commentators??.

And most pool matches seem to have neither.

People may jump on me for this, but pool can learn a lot from snooker commentary.
