Custom cues with LD shafts?

Hi everyone! I been thinking of buying a custom cue for quite some time now. However every time I try a custom I realize that it would be a really big job to switch back from low deflection shafts to regular ones.

I was wondering if anyone knows custom cue makers who make their own LD shafts? If you know or have personal experiences from custom LD shafts please share your experiences!?

Thanks

I know Steve Lomax does because my new player he's making has one coming with it.

Most, if not all, of the LD Shaft Manufacturers also make blank LD shafts that custom cue makers can purchase to put their own custom ring work on. There's more to making an LD shaft, equivalent to an OB, Predator, etc. than making a smaller ferrule.

Many custom cue makers will make up a LD shaft for you.......

Kevin Varney with 2 pre cat 314's

Ed Prewitt with a pre cat 314

Jerry Rauenzahn with pre cat 314

you really need to contact Bob Danielson from BD cues , his custom made SS360 shafts are the nuts .
These shafts in combination with his 6 pie laminated butts are the best hitting cues out there .

Even putting a SS360 shaft on an inferior butt makes it a totallt different cue , my friend bought a cheap Philippines cue and he put on a SS360 shaft . The cue plays like a dream now .

i use an ob1 shaft with my custom cue
the original shafts dont get played

Try Jacoby cues. They make the "Edge" LD shaft which is what I've been using the past two years. I like their performance over Predator or OB.

I would seriously suggest a cue maker who makes his own rather than matching a commercial ld shaft for you. I have two of Kevin Varney's design and they are better than any predator shaft.

Pretty much all of them can get one made up. Why not just order a 314-2 or Z2?

Predator shafts kill the feel of anything they are put on in my experience.

The best LD shafts I tried that also maintain a good hit to the cue:

Mike Webb
Players HXT (cheapest by quite a bit)
Pechauer

It seems that any multi-peice shaft ends up dulling the hit. OB is probably has the best feel of those but still not as solid or smooth feeling as the custom LD shaft or the Players.

I vote jacoby

I have been playing with their edge hybrid now for years and am very satisfied. They also make custom cues from sneaky's all the way up to cue of the year front runners. IMO you cannot go wrong with Dave, Brandon, and the crew at Jacoby, check them out they have a nice website.

Sorry, this simply is not true.

And we make cues starting at - deleted as I think posting the price violates the rules, that include the LD shaft.

That's why I said "it seems". I've yet to try one that did not, but none of those were from a custom maker. I did try a laminated shaft from Steve Klapp and did not like that too much, it was on my son's cue so was the only one of those I tried.

Shafts are a very personal opinion, the issue is spending $100-$200 on something to "try" and see if you like it. Without a way of testing out 4-5-6 shafts on a cue, tough to pick one.

I have the same type of discussions about mice and keyboards all the time on a tech forum I am a moderator at. You can get many suggestions but without actually using the item, you can't make a good decision that's not a guess.

Pat Diveney fit a Predator Z2 to the Custom Ebony Hustler he made for me. I sent Seyberts Biilliards the butt of one of my cues and they fit a 30" modified OB Classic shaft to it. They might have a shorter turn around time then a busy high end cue maker. Any decent cue maker can drill holes and match joints. I don't seem to have a problem switching between the low deflection OB Classic and a Diveney Lake Salvage shaft. Probably has some thing to do with my skill level. LOL

I'd agree about the hit, that and it felt like the shaft was going to shatter every shot.

In my experiences and trying out different LD shafts, only some of the OB's I tried felt really dead. My old Pre Cat 314's do not....

This I would wholeheartedly agree with. Shafts will feel different from cue to cue.
