My APA Update

Hey everybody - last week I talked about running two racks.

Last night I was told my SL had been raised to a 5 - played another five in a race to 4 each.

He broke the first rack -ran all except two of his balls. I finished the table off and won the first match after two innings.

He won the second when I scratched on the 8 - after a stellar bank shot too :(

Third game I wanted vengeance on the 8 so he broke again - nearly made the 8 in the side but left it hanging. I ran 4 balls played safe - and he pocketed the 8 in the side after shooting one of his balls so I won that match.

Match 4 I broke and made the 8 in the left side pocket (a complete fluke orchestrated by 3 balls)

Match 5 I broke again and came up dry. He ran 3 balls and it became a safe battle for 3 innings - he eventually left me a halfway decent kick but he still ended up winning.

Match 6 he broke and cue ball flew off the table - so I was in the kitchen - chose stripes and broke my problem cluster up (solids had 2 clusters, and a ball on the rail with no pocket open) and it was a more simple run out.

Maybe not. Two SL5's...hill-hill match...each player gave the other player a game with scratch-on-8/early 8.

What this match ultimately came down to was the BIH after the break in the case game. If the OP's opponent had not have sent the cue ball off of the table on the break...this match may well have gone the other way.

If it were me making the call...I'd leave him as a SL5 for another week and see what shakes out.

Of course...I knew the comment about him being a 6 next week was a tongue-in-cheek remark. :thumbup: No doubt a lot of people probably thought the same thing to themselves!!!

Actually it wasn't a hill-hill match =P In match six I was up 3-2, and we both had to get to 4 to win. So I was on the hill when I won match 6 - and he was a match away from being on the hill.

Either way - I'm happy to have been moved up =D

Yes, it was...and my tongue remains firmly in my cheek because someone once tried to explain APA scoring to me and my head nearly exploded. :D

Well done Zphix!

I got my UPA ranking bumped twice within 3 weeks/matches in 8B. :angry: It's a b1tch having to win 5 out of 6 racks or lose.
 
Here's the update from today:

-I played a match against a 6 (who was a 6 in 8 ball and a 5 in 9-ball), so I had to win 4 matches and he had to win 5.

First match - I broke made three balls - chose the set (stripes) that didn't have a cluster and ran out calmly.

Second match - I broke again and made a ball with a ridiculously horrible spread - had no chance of running out so I opted to play a safe. My opponent power stroked his 2-ball in and broke the entire cluster around the spot and he ended up winning.

Third match - He broke and after 6 innings I won.

Fourth match - I broke and won after 4 innings --- probably woulda had a decent shot at a run out but hit a bad shot and tied myself up on a ball so had to play a safe. Still managed to pull off the win in a few innings.

Fifth match - the guy approached me and challenged me to a banking game --- where we both would bank every shot we had and I agreed (I knew it would probably add innings to the game but **** it I wanted to have some fun!) so I broke and banked 3 balls, then missed a fourth bank. He banked two balls, kicked a third and missed.... 10 innings later I banked the eight in a cross corner shot to win the series.

Thankfully I love bank and kick shots haha - I was a little weary that he was going to win the next few games - or run out the rack if I missed a bank but I was ahead and got cocky (and wanted to have some fun as well). Either way he increased the inning count which was probably his objective after realizing he only had a game to his name.

If this thread had more views...you'd most likely hear it from people that would say that what y'all did (ran up innings by playing bank 8-ball) was tantamount to sandbagging!!!

And both teams were ok with this? I suddenly remember why I don't play apa.. *golf clap

Sandbagging or not it was 10 innings - which is actually still less than most matches last around here.
 
You two playing banks in the middle of an apa match didn't bug anyone? I mean, I think the worse thing about the apa is that there are 5 matches and when one is not playing they have to sit through others shooting. And then there is a banks game in the middle...ugh!
 
I see that you are in Illinois. What area division do you shoot in? Because the sl rankings can be a bit different depending on which league area.
 
Illiana region.

But, not 10 innings for a 6... 10 innings for most other matches because there are a few 5s, 6s, and 7s in the area and the 4s tend to stay as 4s.

As for the matches - it was the last one in the team vs. team match-up and both sides were drunk (except for me) and nobody really gave a ****.
