question about giving a spot, and a shady move

So, back in the day, I used to gamble quite a bit, but wasn't quite at the level of most people in my area... so I would get weight. In one particular instance some guy offers me the wild 6 ball.

Well who wouldn't at least try that spot! So I did, he proceded to "push" on EVERY break and make the 6...

My question is, as there is no rule that pertains to giving weight... which is correct

the 6 would spot back up, as the 10 ball does when made without being called

or does it stay down, as a legally pocketed ball on a pushout

Normally it comes back up, but with all gambling on pool, things like that should be cleared up before you start.

Spot the 6. Get in his face. It's foul, a foul and poor sportsmanship. BIH.

Dude you surprise me with this.
1. It is not a foul.Ball spots.
2. Get in their face? Laugh at them, there is no need for conflict.
3. This is a past event.

Why did you let him do it a second time? The ball comes up, if he doesn't agree don't play. No big deal. Nothing to even argue about.

This happened over 10 years ago LOL... I was just thinking about it this morning when one of my co-workers was asking about what kind of weight I would give up to him ;)

I definitely lost the set in question, but in the years since, I have more than got my money back. Now he can't win with the last 3.

Outside of general rules when you are playing a game with a spot you have to get the rules straight "YOU are going to play be before hand". There is no rule book that covers private matches with handicaps.

Sometimes something come up during a match that had not been talked about and you have to get on the same page about how you are going to play but it is not usually a problem. Like all rules there is a logic behind them that any reasonable person can recognize.
Again, there is no gun being held on you, if you don't like the rules just quit.

Well, maybe I over-reacted or came off too strong on this alphadog. But I would respond - not with fists - but be firm in discussing that taking a foul to drain a spot is not in the spirit of the game. If it continued, that would be the last time I gambled with him/her. Low rent IMO.

As someone else posted "clear up the rules 1st" - it's good advice. I've never seen someone do it. I've seen it asked "mid-rack" in action if it's OK to do so on a few ocassions, and in each case, all agreed it was not cool.

Everyone who regularly gives or receives weight knows that if the guy giving up the 6-ball pockets it on a foul or a push, it spots. If the guy getting the 6 pockets it on a foul or push, it stays down.

This shouldn't be something you have to specify beforehand; this is just how giving a spot works. If you're going to play it otherwise, then that would have to be specified beforehand.

It's not a foul, it's a push.

If it were a foul that would be fine too, but there would be no point in doing it since it spots up. Unless that would tie up balls on the spot, in which case I think it's a legitimate strategic play.

I saw a game where a guy was getting the 8...first game, his opponent
made it on a push.......he felt it shouldn't spot.
So the man getting the 8 said "Okay."
He picked up the 9 and dropped it into a pocket.
He said "Now, whaddiya wanna do?"

Exactly, that was my point that rules have a basis in logic that any reasonable person should be able to understand. They are not just arbitrary. In your story it required an absurd demonstration to show it..

No it most definitely spots.

As the player getting the 6 consider pushing it in front of a pocket for an early combo. Puts pressure on better player...sometimes they have to take a foul and move it.

Spots are negotiable. It can be anything that is agreed too. I kinda consider this an angle but that being said, I would have said something trying to get clarification. If it was not to my liking, I would unscrew my cue and look for another game. No problem. If it was a race, I would have finished the race (set) and then unscrewed my cue.
