threads complaining about no diamonds at higher level tournaments got me to wondering what you play on in weekly league

Just to put it out there - the league I play in goes like this:

Every week 2 teams play on the Gold Crown 9 footers, and the other 2 teams play on the Diamond bar boxes.

But, it's mostly the Diamonds for my team because they find them easier to play on so that's what I play on for leagues.

Why do you guys find the Diamonds easier to play on? Is it just the size difference? My GC plays just like a Diamond, it will happily reject a firm shot that is less than perfect, shots that will easily fall on a Valley. At a tournament a couple weeks ago we played on Diamonds that had pockets that were noticeably larger than the typical 4 1/2" size. Does Diamond offer different pocket sizes on their bar boxes?

I selected valleys but there is one team who's home location has gold crowns.

These are my GC pockets, slightly smaller than what is found on our local Diamond bar boxes.

i just got around to voting in my own poll.

i voted valleys as that is what i play on 99% of the time. one or 2 times a session....depending on how the lo schedules ....we play on gold crowns.

we do have one or two apa travel teams that are based at a pool hall with diamonds. i dont play in that division so i never get to play on diamonds.....except if i make singles regionals.

they are held at jobs in nashville.

The pockets on the Diamond are the typical 4 1/2" size, and the pockets on the GC are slightly smaller.

My teammates approach it from this angle - the Diamond is 7 feet and smaller, so it should be easier to play on (All of my teammates are around 21 except 1 excluding me) because they don't have years of experience in playing so the smaller table seems easier. Granted, I don't have years of experience either but I prefer the 9 footers to the 7 footers.

So, the preference has nothing to do with pocket sizes, just table sizes. When we play on the 9 footers, I'm usually the only one that gets a win for the team.

I realize that wording polls is tricky business, but not everybody has those types of tables.

Olhausens here at our home room. A hodgepodge of various tables, mostly Brunswicks but not Gold Crowns, at our other room.

(Matter of fact, the rooms in both neighboring towns, where we play our Tri Cups at, also have Brunswicks but not gold crowns.)

You might have tried to include table size too. That would interest me. 9 footers here.

I have only been playing 2 1/2 years now but after playing/practicing on my GC so much I definitely find the 7' tables easier, especially Valleys. One place that I play in tournaments has 7' & 9' Diamonds, I was surprised and a little disappointed that they play all tournaments on the 7' tables.

The way I see it is consistency. Valleys can vary greatly from one table/location to the next, but just about every Diamond you play on should be about the same, unless it's been beat to hell.

I primarily played on Valleys and then a little on GC's for APA, but now we've got a couple of Diamond locations in our division(including home bar), so it's Diamonds, some GC's for the teams that play out of a hall and then the rest have Valley/Dynamo tables. I'll play on whatever.

The only problem I tend to have is I play/practice on the GC triple shimmed 9 footer with the really tight pockets and my body gets used to hitting with a certain speed to play position on the 9 footers.

Then, shifting to the 7s it takes a little while before I compensate properly because my body wants to do one thing and my mind another.

Yeah, the speed can be tough to adjust to on a 7' table, especially a Red label Diamond. Its almost like you cant shoot soft enough on some shots.

bump for more votes.

i know we only have 70 votes so far but it kinda proves my theory that more people play on valleys than diamonds.

with that being said i guess the people that complain about not having diamonds at their nationals are the ones who play locally on diamonds.

as for me i dont care if its diamonds or valleys...as long as they are in good shape.

I play in three travel leagues, and my home tables are all different, and the opposition varies.

Monday APA 8-ball: three Valleys
Tuesday APA 9-ball: AMF 9-foot or 7-foot Dynamo (depending I'd both teams play at home)
Thursday winter local 8-ball league: 7 foot dynamo.

Inconsistency week to week is a real *****, but I think the craziest part is that our APA tri cups and top gun are played in a pool hall with a mix of gold Crowns and Valleys, then the LTCs are being held in a local casino with rented Valleys. Seems like teams that play on 9' tables in this league will have the advantage more often than not.
