That's some nice insight into how you incorporate pool into your teaching. Your students are lucky to have you as a professor. Thanks for all you do to help us laymen understand the game better.

Dr. Dave, I would have enjoyed having you as a teacher when I was in engineering school. As I recall, my Statics Prof was Russian and Dynamics Prof was Indian. Could hardly understand either one of them and we certainly didn't use any fun stuff like pool as teaching examples.

nice video dr.dave
you for sure have helped me with my game

Thanks. I was very happy with how good a job they did with the filming and editing. I wish I could afford to hire those guys to do my future DVD projects.

Your students are lucky to have you as a professor.
I'm also lucky to be at a university that values this sort of thing.

Thanks for all you do to help us laymen understand the game better.
You're welcome ... and thank you!

Catch you later,
Dave

I also had some awful professors in school, but I also had a few awesome ones that helped inspire me (with the engineering, not pool).

I'm glad to hear that you have benefited from my stuff.

Please help spread the word.

FYI, my "day job" university (Colorado State University) recently created a collection of marketing videos featuring selected professors, and they included me because of my passion for pool.

For those interested, here it is:

video interview dealing with how Dr. Dave incorporates his passion for pool into the engineering classroom

It's fairly short (less than 2 minutes), but it gives nice attention to my billiards interests.

Enjoy,
Dave

Have you ever tried to expand your reach? Have you ever been on TV discussing pool? You have sort of a hook, the professor thing, maybe try to get on Letterman or Fallon. You can be the Dr. Ruth of pool.

That's very flattering, but it's probably a bit of a stretch. I don't think my "hook" is prime-time worthy; although, I certainly would be honored and thrilled if somebody invited me to be a "Dr. Ruth" of pool.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to dr_dave again.

Thanks for sharing that, very interesting concept...I'm glad I'm not one of your students, I would make it a life's mission to defeat you on the table....and I know that would be quite a feat!!

Good show!

Excellent post sir! Thank you for all you have done for this game we all share a passion for.

Good stuff, Dr. Dave.

One question. What game were you playing when you shot the 8 ball near the end of the video? From the table layout, it couldn't have been 8-ball or any rotation game. Looks like you were playing safe. Seemed like the crowd was into it.

There were a few students who were gunning for me last semester, but I managed to fend them off. I look forward to seeing them again in a couple of years when their games improve.

I had set up a shot to show them how spin-induced throw (SIT) could be used to pocket a ball that could not be cut to the pocket. I set it up for several of them to try (before showing them SIT), and they all missed the pocket by inches. Then I shot it with spin and stun and threw it into the hole. Many students around the table were surprised this was possible (even though we had discussed the theory in class), hence their reaction.

Thanks for sharing that great clip. Very interesting how you are able to use the dynamics of billiards in your "day job". You're a lucky man to be able to use your passion to help educate students who are our future. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you. I agree that I am lucky to be able to infuse my passion into my work.

Thank you Dr Dave for all you do for pool.
Your taking pool to the classroom and teaching what is actually happening during a shot, and then applying the science to it so that it is better understood is a great way to increase the level of interest.
It also can be used to show how hard of game this is and the level of understanding that it takes to play at the pro level.
Mark
