I bought a Fellini case recently and this cue was inside the case. It was from an estate selling boutique in Oregon. I was hoping for a double on this play. But pretty sure just made out on the case.
No markings anywhere on or in cue. also has a roll to it. Shaft was stripped and literally slipped on. A friend of mine has a McDermott c shaft that kinda matches and fits tightly.
Told him he could have the cue and he insisted on giving me $200.
Should I keep the money? Or is the cue junk?
Would appreciate any input from the AZ guru's out there. :bow-down:

Joss, old. Wish there were more Joss Collectors of those early cues....

Was a pretty good buy too.
Just trying to be fair on the deal.
 
keep the money, that cue is not high end or anything but i would say thanks to the joint its a pretty well built cue.

IMHO that cue would retail for 2k (I could be on the low side) at any show. Ivory rings, joint and 6 windows also that looks like it is the same leather that George Balabushka used. I have seen 4 well worn wraps and damn if it doesn't look the same. (Except George's seem is straighter) :)

i didnt think it was ivory, i dont see any grain, but ur eye is probobly more experienced, If thats the case and it is all ivory I would try to find the maker. a two grand score is pretty sweet.

What do you mean?

Its an early Joss with ivory joint, trim rings and ivory windows. No sarcasm on my end. That cue was made around the time Dan and Bill separated. (+/- a few years)

Like I said, those cues don't command what they should, IMHO.

If I read this right, James gave is buddy a great deal with the cue for $200. Make sure your pal knows what you did for him.

This is a cue made probably before 1970. Maybe during the Summer of Love:D
Early, early JOSS. Thick veneer should date it. Bill Stroud & Dan Janes were just learning how to make blanks when this cue was made.
Back end is probably not ivory. More likely implex like the joint rings. It would be pretty cool if that wrap was original....

Thanks for identifying the cue. I truly had no idea. I could tell it wasn't ivory and points weren't even. But was more exciting to my buddy.
Sorry guys, not ready to sell case yet. Just got it. I'm going to post pic in a minute on this forum.
But if it goes up for sale you all will be first to know.

I'd say your asking price should be closer to 2K than 2 hundred, if that is a Joss, which I think it is. That thick white veneer is one of the things i've only seen on some early Joss cues, about 1970 or so. If the joint isn't ivory, it could be a replacement, though they did make a few implex joint cues back then. Suggest you take a close look at the buttplate too. Sometimes those scribed Joss logos tend to get close to rubbed off. It looks like delrin, which rarely need replacement. It would be nice to see some pics of the Fellini case as well. In those early days Joss cues offered a Felini case with a cue for something like $55 extra, if memory serves correctly. This looks like one of the more striking finds I've seen in quite some time.
 
My best guess Verl Horn

Karella should be able to verify because he trained under Verl Horn....

Verl Horn was famous for his ivory butt plates like this and ivory joints.

Great find and it's a keeper... But I could wrong. :o
