Breaking with your player

I've had just as much success lately breaking with my Klapp player as I do with my designated breaker. It's also nice to just carry one cue. Is is really that bad on the shaft? It's the pro taper 12.4mm that came with the cue when new. I really like the cue, so I don't want to mess it up, but I'm not exactly cracking any cue balls either..

I also have the option of alternating a break shaft, but who wants to screw on a different shaft twice a game?

For me, I have no problems breaking or jumping with my playing cue. The only issue I have is the tip flattens, and mushrooms out.

if there is a 3 ball pass the balk line rule or playing 8ball/10 ball I will prefer to use a break cue.

Use a house cue... Then your not carrying to much around. That's my approach!

I break with my player quite a bit as well, and I see no problem with it, as long as you don't:
A) try to smash the bejeezus out of every rack
B) have an ivory ferrule or a soft playing tip

Depending on how the table breaks, I sometimes find I need that extra power that comes from using a break cue, especially in 10-ball.

I haven't seen it be an issue other than fatiguing the tip. Out of all the cues I've owned, there are only 2 I haven't broke with. One had an LD shaft with a Kamui super soft (my solid maple shaft with a Kamui s/s had mushroomed the tip after playing about 3-4 hours) and the other cue is a one off custom I had made for me and I really don't want to damage anything on it. I also rarely play with it.

My break cue is an old Canadian Falcon that I also use a player with a Tiger Sniper tip. I can get a clean break and stop shot the cue ball to get a good start on running out. Any phenolic cues I've used to break tend to be a loose cannon break. I like more control.

I think its all personal preference, but I don't think it'll cause too much of an issue as long as you aren't trying to break at 60 mph.

It's not bad on the shaft.

It "may" be bad on the tip and the ferrule.

If that is of no concern to you, then break away.

It depends on what I'm breaking on.

On a 7-foot Diamond then I'll break with my players simply because you don't need to use a lot of force to get a good spread. Thus, there is no damage done to the tip at all and my Kamui Soft has retained it's shape very very well.

On 9 footers though I like to break harder and put my body into the break shot so I grab a house cue :o

If you have a "normal" deflection shaft with no hollowed out front end then really the only problem will
be your tip flattening out sooner then normal.

If you have an LD shaft you're ferrule is generally a lot thinner walled and thus more fragile.
Breaking with an ivory ferrule would be similar, it's not that it will crack but there is certainly a higher chance.

Because of the tip issues, I think the real the real question is do you need a high-tech break cue, or just a light pool cue with a hard tip.
The common denominator is light weight & hard tip.
If I'm using a jump/break I want a tip I can jump with, and I like to jump with a phenolic tip.
A few years ago I had 7 different jump/break cues, and I was breaking with an old Predator sneaky pete, original worn down hardened Lepro tip.
The tip is really important for me, and some cues just don't feel right to break with, so you have to experiment a little.

I too have had a couple Klapp cues and have broke with all of them. Never hurt them a bit and I break fairly solidly. I have had micarta or juma ferrules on them and old chandivert crown tips(single layer hard). Breaks great. No issues with mushrooming or flattening either. That's mainly the epic amazingness of the crown tip.

I've come to realize over the years, that I broke the balls in 9 ball the best with a Joss cue with a steel joint and ivory ferrules. I used Le Pro tips so I didn't have much of a problem with tips flattening. The Joss was my playing cue for several years, until I sold it in a moment of stupidity. I now have a dedicated break cue, Gulyassy Orange Crush, but seldom play rotation games any more.

unless you are using a super hard tip, your player will not break as well as the identical cue with a hard "break tip"

more energy transfer, just a fact of physics.

if you don't mind giving up some break speed then beating on your tip is the only downside unless you lean on your cue during follow through

I know this sounds crazy, but I have been breaking with my jump cue on the bar box the last little bit. It spreads the balls out plenty and the cue ball stops dead center every time. Of course that's not an option on the big table though.

I break with Szamboti, my playing cue.

I have to smile when I see a break cue for 99% of players.

The owner of a pool room I went to was an old school pool player and whenever he saw a guy pull out a break cue, he would whisper..."league player" and roll his eyes...

Unless you break like thunder, I find it rather silly, but I carry one, and break like a 12 year old school girl.

After reading all the above posts, it seems to boil down to "it's your thing, do what you want to do".

lol.. 12 year old school girl ? ahem, sorry to hear that... ;) I've cracked ferrules breaking with my player on two occasions. I use a fairly soft tip and would rather maintain the shape of my tip than worry about some old dude whispering that I'm a league player. Either way, if I'm playing on a barbox i just use my player although i'm sure I could get away with using a chop stick after watching Cory Deuel soft break the shit out of that USBTC tourney a few months back.
