Today's Name Dropping - Szamboti

Since everybody may be waiting to see who says what (lol), I'll go first...

Shaft inserts don't look Szam to me. They look more like earlier Motteys. Szams have more of a pronounced rounded edge. These are nearly flat. Also, newer whiter maple, not old enough to be a Gus. Just my first thoughts. There are a lot of things to look for though.

Yeah, I get the 'too new' feeling...even in storage, the wood discolors a bit.
But if I was down there and could buy at the opening bid price, I would
buy them in a heartbeat.

Those cues look great.

The shaft inserts were the first red flag for me too.......

I saw these and was curious as well. The points and ringwork do look good to my uneducated eye is all I can say. Oh, and he edited his original post - the post I read last night referred to a certain respected cuemaker by the name of Pete Tescorora lol.

I know I wont be spending in the neighborhood of $2k for an unmarked cue that may or may not have come from one of pools premier builders. Better get some proof first.

The wording on that listing is very suspect.

It "May" be this great maker, but may not, this guy said it may, so maybe but I am not going to verify it.

Just enough bullshit so that someone may think they could get a bargain and enough not saying anything that ebay can't yank the money back if it's not a Szam.

This painting was done very much in the style of Picasso and his great great nephew said it may be a lost original but I don't want an expert to verify it because of my war injury that prevents me from traveling more than 400 feet from my house.

Yep, a bit too nebulous.

If anyone really thought they had a $10,000 cue they would not worry much about spending money to get it authenticated.

What does Barry charge for examining a cue? I agree that it is strange a seller would not take that step.

I bought a cue once that was being passed off as a Balabuska....
...but we all smelled a rat.
I bought it at a copy price and doubled my money....
....because it was a good cue.

I feel the same about these...they're worth 2Gs.

Anybody remember the kid who was selling a fancy Pechauer cue on ebay years back? Think his name was Rory. He worded his auction such that there was the picture of the cue along with a lengthy description of it. The only pic he supplied was Pechauer's one page advertisement flyer (think it was some kind of limited series model). Anyhow, the wording said something to the effect, "The high bidder of this auction will receive the cue picture here"....not "the cue picture(d) here".

As I recall, the winning bidder who paid quite a high price misread it and assumed he was getting the cue. He got a picture in the mail, literally....to the tune of several hundred dollars. lol

There was a big stink about that. Can't remember if it was on here or RSB...

Caveat emptor and remember it pays to read all the print.

Not Szamboti cues

Well, if I can put my 2 cents in here and not offend anyone.

I can tell you that the 2nd listing (the rosewood? cue with the brown leather wrap),
is Not one of Dad's cues or even his prong.

The shafts for both cues look to be made by the same guy. I don't know who made
the cues. They look nice. Whoever did them should sign his name to let people
know what his work looks like.

By the way, did anyone notice the 6 window shafts have different trim rings?

The prong on the 6 window could be Dad's. But I'd want to have it in hand to be sure.

I don't like people saying that I think something could be Dad's when I haven't held it.

Thanks for posting. I thought the 6 window looked pretty good, but the shafts are aftermarket some way.

These cues are in all probability Paul Mottey Cues. I would say I am very sure that is the case.

I feel like it's a visit from Billiard Royalty....:bow-down:

Please drop in more often, sir.

Are we sure this Szamboti guy here that posted knows anything about a Gus?

He probably knew if Gus liked Lasagna, Spaghetti or Manicotti with or without meatballs:D.

How did the title of the thread get changed from "Sxamboti" to "Szamboti" without an "edit" appearing?
