For 3 ball I only have seen it behind the line, if the only ball is behind the line it gets spotted. Ball in hand for 3 ball is way too much of an advantage.
We always played in the kitchen. If needed we spot a ball and shoot a spot shot.
I hadn't thought of spotting the ball if it's in the kitchen. Good solution.
I don't think bih is that powerful an advantage though if the shooter receives a one shot penalty for the scratch.
Like an OB shot in golf, one shot in, one shot out.
So he'd likely be out of the running for the win with a scratch anyway.

Last time we played with the one shot penalty for a scratch and BIH. I saw a guy win a round scratching on break and making 2 balls. A better solution would be the penalty and any balls made in same shot as scratch would spot up.
Interesting. may as well be a DQ though.
I like DQ the best as an option but I don't think you would get nearly as many participants willing to play that way.
Player makes all three balls on the break and scratches. What score should he get?

In nine ball if the player scratched and sunk the 9 wouldn't it just be spotted and bih to oponent?
8 ball it's a loss.
So sink three and scratch
a) dq
b) one ball (a single ball) gets spotted and player shoots from kitchen at a shot count of 2.
I guess b makes the most sense.
Do a lot of places still play you can win or lose on the break? Sorry off topic.
I've only seen all 3 balls made and a scratch on the break 1 time and he got a 2. I know we wouldn't have nearly as many players in the game if we dq'd . Either way in most of the games I play if you scratch chances are you aren't going to win unless the above happens.

I am setting up a little three ball for next week and just wanted to have a fair (and commonly used) set of rules to set.
Well we played.
Scratch was one shot penalty, shoot from the kitchen.
I came out ahead. Though almost got lucked out of it:
Fairly large pot, certainly the largest of the evening, with me shooting second to last, and the lowest score was a 5 before me.
I sunk a ball on the break, then knocked my other two down for a total of a three.
Next guy steps up and breaks dry, with balls at opposite ends of the table. So I win right? Nope, the guy rears back and smashes a ball, and somehow miraculously slops in two balls on one shot, not only that but the cue ball rolled gently over to set him up for an easy make on the next shot. He tied me :angry:
Upside is we re antied tied a couple more times, then I ended up shooting last and only had to beat a six, i got a 5 :embarrassed2:

Plus a one stroke penalty so you are laying two with three spotted in a line, shooting from the kitchen.
We have always played, if you scratch you are done and you put up a quarter for the next rack.
Yep, that's the way we play, too. Two tie, all tie.
Get 7 or 8 guys playing, a couple of ties/bumps/antes, and all of a sudden the pot gets up there ($$$).
Then, if you're the second or third guy in the round (and don't tie), you're rooting for everybody else to tie (and push the pot).

We play a scratch is an automatic 7, I've seen a hand full of 2 never a 1, but yeah good times
We always play that 5 is the most anyone could score. No matter what happens, 5 is the max number. Played it that way since the 80's all over the place.
Never played bih in 3 ball either, if you scratch it is in the kitchen. If the you scratch and the only ball left is in the kitchen it spots.
Scratch your out , one tie all tie, have to shoot a legitimate 5.
