OPs should have thread permissions

So excuse me for being a computer nerd, but from a logical standpoint, reason would dictate that if I start a thread, it is mine, and I should own it. Inherently, as it is my thread, if I deem someone's comments as detrimental to my posting, I should be able to delete and/or block said person from my thread (not the site, just that one thread).

Just curious if you all agree with this logic, or I am putting way to much thought into something.

I do not agree.

You don't own the thread. You own your posting to it, but it's a public forum and others have a right to weigh in on any topic. That is the point of a public forum. If you want that kind of control, start a blog.

Not sure if that's possible but even if it was I don't like it. If you don't want to see someones posts you can always use the block feature.

I don't know the answer to that problem... your ideas have some logic.

I'm an old man, & what I've learned is that we take the good with the bad.

If you can please some of the people, some of the time, you'll be way ahead in life.

AZB is a mixture of ideas, cultures, opinions & different kinds of people all inter-connected through our chosen Sport.... WHAT A MIX....?

I don't like that idea, it's like newspaper sensorship, we will only see what you want us to see.

Someone posts a question on cues/tips/etc... and if they have someone say that what they are using is not good, they can just remove the post. What they need to have is more moderators, which I think they are already working on.

The computer site I am a moderator on has maybe 20 moderators instead of like 2 that are on here.

Try Facebook.

Plus there are just issues with that approach.

If someone comes on and provides bad information, and every post correcting that person is deleted by the OP then we have a thread of bad information without any counterpoint in it to alert people that the OP is wrong.

I was speaking more specifically about me asking a question, and then two people who don't like each other post their opinions, disagree and start arguing personal issues rather than the issue addressed in the thread.

As things sit now, if you report someone for being a jerk in your thread... they get banned.

I don't want to ban anyone, I just want childish name calling to be able to be stopped within a thread

Try Facebook.

That was my thought exactly.
This is AZ.....own what you post....and be prepared to defend your position.

You will never learn a thing from a man who agrees with you.

Yeah I don't agree with the original poster either. And I guess under his own rules he could delete all of our posts.

That's where the ignore function helps but not much. When two people start derailing a thread normally a few more pop in to give their opinion on the argument rather than the post itself. You won't see their posts but you also basically lose your post all together and in some cases it just gets deleted. I just think your idea has as many pitfalls as what goes on today. If it was only used as you intend to use it then it would work great but unfortunately we all see some of the posts around here and know that's not how it will be used by everyone.

Edit: Now that he explained it with that example it would be nice to have if it was only used like that but it wouldn't be. We've seen great threads deleted because of fights that had nothing to do with the original thread.

Yeah, you are probably right... its too bad.

Especially when the two knuckleheads that are derailing the thread are both people I respect, and or would like to hear the opinion of.

That's the problem with computer nerds. They all think that the way they approach a problem is the logical one.

This.

Can you imagine what this forum would be without any discussion at all? I'm guessing there would be 5000 threads about CTE/TOI without any critique and "cuemaker X is a great guy" threads. People posting information that is bad or false get corrected quickly, that's the beauty of a public forum. There is allready a lot of sycophancy as it is. There would probably be a lot of unintended consequences as posters who do not like each other would delete each others posts for no good reason other than malice or clique politics etc..

I think maybe deleting certain posts could be used more. It would have to be under the moderators control, and not be overused, but sometimes it is appropriate.

The only way to get rid of that is to get off the internet. I think every single public place where you can comment on things ends up being 4 good on topic posts and 50 where you read "you're so stupid, you fail at life, where is your degree in so and so topic???". At least in the Main Forum here not everything disolves into arguements about which president is responsible for the price of Nike sneakers or if religions have any basis in reality.

Editorial

The purpose of the forum is for free exchange. Positives and negatives come with that. While it would not serve your specific example of asking a question, perhaps you need an editorial section as in a newspaper or rant section, where you can express you opinion un challenged. However, it would not best serve the overall forum goals.

I can understand your frustration sifting through the tread to string together the information of interest, but many times the drama associated can provide alittle levity, especially if you are not involved.

Maybe I miss my business which was women's shoes, (Wholesale and retailing). Most days were filled with yelling, screaming and agrueing. It became amusing when you would see someone else worked up and be able to sit calmly on the sideline uninvolved. Maybe i am a sicko?

Give the OP the ability to delete posts?

I suspect there would be some really short threads

(by the way, isn't this NPR?)

Just think of the out of context posts we could get going though.

On further reflection this could be fun. :)

I agree. Womens shoes, eh? Guess you get a lot of Al Bundy related jokes:
