Schmelke Secret?

"fades in, fades out"
I have read here, and on other boards, about products from Schmelke USA. I have yet to come across anything derogatory about how their cues play the quality of materials or workmanship. As far as I can discern they appear to be the # 3 production cue house in the U.S.A. What puzzles me is how they keep their price point so far below the # 1&2 production houses. You can purchase one of Schmelke’s mid- priced cues (full splice with inlays), a soft case, extra tips and a 12 pack of chalk, with shipping for the same money as you will spend on the lowest priced, no frills U.S. made cue from the other two producers. Is it the size of the operation? Low overhead cost? What’s the secret?

Don't question it, just enjoy dealing with a small, customer-focused AMERICAN company. Great folks to deal with.

Just a guess but they have a couple of generations in the business growing up learning the skill and talent needed to make cues. This means they have the equipment and it's been paid off long ago.
This also means they have life long connections in the north woods lumber industry and know good wood when they see it.

They sell spliced blanks to a good number of "custom" builders who don't have those skills. So what do you get when you buy their "production" cue? Which BTW, you can order with about any size, weight, pin, joint, wood, wood grade or high end L/D shaft that you want.

That custom builders name in the butt of a cue is only for ego masturbation.

Exactly. I called them about getting a sp butt for a OB shaft. For 75% of the sp cue price they would make butt w/ plain blk. collar. Rings and custom shaft fitting is extra. Nice people. Must be the beer and brats.

We do like our beer and brats in Wisconsin and brandy, too. Actually we like anything with alcohol.

I special ordered a 30" full splice rosewood into rosewood butt with light brown phenolic
joint and butt cap, with a 3/8-10 G10 pin. Also ordered a 32" shaft for it with a modified
euro taper and a 3/8" long ferrule at 11.3 mm.
Total cost was less than $350. Very reasonable, and great people to deal with.

Oldschool, Very nice cue. What with the length, ferrule size, pin and rose into rose splice, you truly have a custom, one of a kind cue. Just think, for only ten times the price you could have had some big shots name carved into the butt. Even if the blank was still made by Schmelke.

And that Technoid is the real secret of Schmelke. They make what you want, what you need.
