Smoked my xylotex controller

Coos Cues
I bought a used cnc table saw machine from Leonard and after much modification work and learning I finally got it running quite well. It was cutting everything smooth and I have learned enough basic G code to write my own stuff and was having a ball. Until I got careless. Let the connector on the spindle snag on the end of the thing and short circuit to the body of the machine and out came the smoke.

I know that the gecko is way better but if I go that route will I need to change the stepper motors too? They were working flawlessly but it would be nice for the lead screw to have more power to facilitate quicker return. Would the gecko stepper motors accomplish this end? Has anyone modified Blud's table saw setup to gecko g540 that could give me some advice?

This is what I'm looking at http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-axis-Gecko-G540-kit-with-381-oz-in-Stpper-Motor-48V-7-3A-/121549715178

Thanks,

JC,
You asked "but if I go that route will I need to change the stepper motors too?"
Probably not, but you'd need to provide some spec's on the current motors in order for anyone to say. The most important parameter is the rated amperage of the motors. The optimum amperage is 3.0-3.5 amps, but higher amperage motors can be used, you simply lose some power. Also, are the motors 4-wire? 6-wire? A Gecko can drive either, it's just that it's a little easier with 4-wire motors.
Anyway, if you'l provide more specs on your current motors, we can provide you with more guidance.
My 2 cents,
Gary

The motors are xylotex 4 wire 2.8 amp 1.9 nm. I took the box apart and it appears that the smoke came from the power supply as it's dead and stinks. Don't see anything obvious with the control board and now I'm not even sure that connector on the spindle actually shorted but it was snagged and starting to stretch right when it quit so probably. But for sure the power supply is dead as it has no output and wont even run the cooling fans. Xylotex has one for $35 on their web site and I'm wondering if there's any chance that's all that's wrong? The control board has nothing written on it to identify it. I hate to spend $500 if not necessary since this machine was running well before.

Based on some other component choice made in the construction of this machine the only thing I'm pretty sure of about the electronics is that they were cheap.

Thanks,

JC
