The Hustlers - My Thoughts

Well I just got in from doing some hustling of my own. I played ten a game one pocket giving 9/8, got up 7 games and we adjusted to 9/7. Its late so we agree to two more games for $40 a pop, I win the first one and he unscrews says he has had enough. Pays me $60 and says he owes me $60 and can I pay his time too... Sure pal. He is drunk and needs a ride home so I give him a ride home which is about 30 miles round trip for me. Yeah I know the guy, know him well enough to know better. See how true hustling goes?

Now for the review...

I have to say I was skeptical but also rooting for it to be somewhat decent. Keep in mind most of us are pool players so I guess we are biased on it and will scoff at certain things because we are in the life. I am truly curious as to how non pool players or recreational players view it.

I thought getting to know a bit more about the characters would have been good especially Jarrod considering he was injured in the Boston Marathan Bombing. You need to hook people because that first episode or two might be the only shot you got at them. Go a bit more into detail about the players and shorten up the pool playing scenes a little bit more. Tell how these couple met, how they got into pool, and so on as it just needs more character and attachment for the viewer.

I truly hope along the line they have some of the NY players in it other then those shown because there are some true characters and hustlers there who can play pool at a high level. You got Shaw, Earl, Mika, Robles, and lots of short stop speed players with a ton of character. I am all for the females getting in there even if they don't play at a high level they are a draw for viewers who like looking at chicks playing pool. Finnegan is great being the ringmaster and he truly is a man of action always into something.

I feel its good for pool and we should all support it, it seems like a fun show and I will be tuning in hoping to see where it leads. I think you will see people come into the poolrooms because of it and maybe some fresh meat or some player catching a second wind/mid life crisis and getting in the grease again. I just do hope that these new hustlers coming in looking for action don't talk smack the whole time during a set, they won't have a clue as to pool ettiquette after watching that show.

I am curious as to why I don't see any billiard companies involved in this, maybe they are not needed but from what Mikey Frost said no one got involved. I think they missed the boat because this is on TV nationwide and a golden opportunity has passed especially if the show takes off.

P.S. I think we should all view it and help with the viewership numbers and another way is to rate the show high wherever you can online because lots of people will check something out if its rated excellent in the reviews. Good luck to The Hustlers. :)

Not sure if they are involved or not but i got an Email from OB Cues to watch the show.

I would have, but i'm in Canada.

I did see a commercial for PoolDawg billiard supplies why the show was on air so at least thats something!

Thanks Lenny for a realistic critique. The other reviews I read in the other thread were totally negative nit picking. So far this show is exclusively about a segment of the New York pool world that is based at Steinway's. Maybe it will expand to other rooms and New York pool characters or maybe it will expand on the relationships there at Steinway's. Either way, the production values were decent and overall helpful to pool in general. I agree that some of the larger pool companies missed a good opportunity. The actual world of pool that many of us know is not easy to portray. Some people have a screen presence most don't, hence the few numbers of real big and little screen stars. Mike Deschaine came across very well. I will continue to view the show and hope for improvement. I also think that the general public who watched were probably more impressed than serious pool players and professional railbirds and that would be good!

There is always room for improvement but I think its good for pool and should bring a little bit of new blood (money) in the game.

I would have gladly tried to get involved in product placement if the nut wasn't too high... apparently tho most of these reality shows are done on the hush hush so I never saw much about it until it was in the can and ready to air.......
