Your wrong if you think that the only reason people buy nice cues is to play better. There is something to be said for making sure that everything around you contributes to your psyche.
I have a high end cue that I play with that people are always making me offers for, I enjoy owning that cue and playing with it, never going to sale it.
As I've stated many times before, it's the 5" space between your ears not the equipment. Someone please prove me wrong.
