Lesson with Dennis
I enjoyed my session with Dennis and Jay yesterday. Dennis provided many useful tips. The most interesting nugget for me is he tied together two problems I was previously aware of but had not connected.
Dennis first had me shoot through a few 9-ball racks, first giving me some tips on the break. Then we practiced certain shots, with him providing constant feedback. He noticed I tend to have a bias towards shooting with a little right english. I had been shooting a 30-degree cut sending the OB down the rail to my right and trying to use straight draw. I knew this was an intermittent problem in my stroke.
Later he set up a tough 40-degree cut with the CB on the foot spot and OB a few inches above the head spot. He noticed (as I've noticed before) that on these shots I'm better when cutting the OB towards my left. He said it's because of the previous problem of tending to shoot with right english. I had never tied these two issues together. Right english is outside english when cutting a ball to the left, but inside english (and hence tougher) when cutting a ball towards the right.
We also worked on a number of drills he suggested and a number of details of bridging, cue elevation, etc.
