I play in the suburbs of a major Metro area, been on AZB not too long, less than 2 years. I'm constantly surprised at the amount of pool players I encounter that have never heard of this place...because I ask them. Alot of my surprise is that it's frequently people that are pretty into the game, i.e., people you'd expect to be here (or at least know of AZB). Maybe it's something, maybe it isn't, but thought I'd share.

Do any of you share similar experiences?

Yes, very similar experience.

But some people are readers/joiners and others aren't. It's the same way at other "enthusiast" websites such as golf, fishing, etc.

Actually, you've been a member less than one year, 8 or 9 months to be exact LOL, profile shows joined Jan 2015. Did you know about this site before you joined? How did you find it?

I would bet if anyone did a search for something pool related, like rules or a question about a cue, a link to the forums would show up.

I knew about this site for a while before I actually joined. I think when the rec.sport.billiard group fell apart, many members went to azbilliards and formed the core group of posters.
 
I found it doing an online search a few years ago then joined....8 or 9 months ago lol.
 
Like with any area of interest, people are involved on many different levels and in many different ways.

Some subscribe to magazines, some read online forums or Facebook, some do none of the above.

DJ14.1...Yes, I have the same experience, and it's not related to area of the country, nor different in metro or rural areas. That's why anytime I give lessons I always make sure my student(s) are aware of AzBilliards, and encourage them to at least read, and register if they want to ask a question.

I was taken here only several years ago when searching for a used LD shaft to try & I've been playing the game for nearly 50 years...but when was the internet born?

To be very honest, I've only learned a couple of things by being here for those several years that I could actually add to my game & both were from former Professional Players.

I think the only reason that I am still here is that there seems to be many that lack real knowledge of the game & at my age I like talking & helping others with the game nearly as much as I do playing the game.

Unfortunately, there are many arrogant members here that see many thing as only one way, their way... even if their way may not be the best way.

So, it is not too easy for someone to find help here when threads turn into word wars & competitions on who can insult the most within the rules of the site & any real substance or discussion of such gets lost in those battles.

So, if a member does not like that atmosphere why would they tell anyone about AZB?

Word of mouth is & always has been the BEST form of advertising.

So true and so sad. In actuality there are only about a dozen on here that ruin it for others.

Some are more prolific than others & there may actually be less than 12. I think a few are only followers & gang fighters, so to speak. If the leaders & worst offenders were not here, some of the others might fade into the background for that type of activity.
 
The biggest misconception that people have is that sports forums must have many pro players
That is faulty thinking on so many levels
1) if serious or pro players posting here often , you start to wonder how much time they spend playing and whether they are any good
2) majority of sports fans are non-players or not any good - they just have 1 thing in common - they love the game. The majority of MMA fans do not know how to fight
3) advertisers/ sellers can make most money and value from fans who are non - players. Get them hooked on playing and easier to sell them all kinds of stuff, accessories. Whereas it will be trying to sell stuff to serious players will be like selling ice to Eskimos. More advertisers/ sellers =more ad revenue =longer lifespan of this forum
4) it would be better to have 10,000 pool fans in this forum community than 10,000 serious players . Sure a number of pro players making guest star appearances here would be great. But by and large, you want more members at the lower mass level who are new, naive,want to learn . That knowledge gap / vacuum of these members is good for the forum
So next time newbies come into this forum , try to nurture and groom them- don't chase them away for their naïveté

That was mainly why I started the post. For all the good this site does for the sport, it seems to lack alot of basic exposure from what I've seen. Some of the other posters seem to agree. Was just drawing some attention to that in case AZB felt like spreading their wings a little.
