I played in the Western BCA tournament for the Masters Men this weekend. I played very well during the tournament and made it to the finals. I have been on the live stream 3 times now and have played poorly each time. I got beat 8-2 in the finals and wasn't happy with my performance again. I played for about an hour and a half before the finals and felt good. I also practice for about 30 hours two weeks prior to the tournament.

For the record in the last four years playing in the Masters Men 9 Ball I have placed 5th - 6th, 3rd, 3rd and now 2nd in 9 ball. I generally only play in two Western BCA tournaments a year. I generally don't play any local tournaments. This year I played in the National BCA team tournament for the first time making four tournaments I played in this year. My current Fargo score is 655.

Any recommendations from some of your seasoned live stream players or seasoned tournament players?

Just play your game the same way you that got you to the finals, ignore the bright lights surrounding you......good luck in the future

Congrats on 2nd Bob!

Congratulations on winning 2nd place. Were the livestream matches recorded? If so, maybe you can watch yourself and spot the issues.

The next time you are faced with a streaming match, ask yourself if you deserve to be there. If the answer is yes, then act like it. It's just like being in a play. Become the character you want to be in your play. Act like him. Chew gum like him. Walk like him. Shoot like him.

This seems to be a excellent answer to my problem! Thank you!

I was on stream twice a couple years ago, and thankfully those matches are no longer available for viewing. Played awful.

I think it's the same process of getting used to playing in front of spectators. You eventually just forget they are there or at least are vaguely aware of their presence. My first streamed match I looked up at the camera a few times, I was especially aware of it after a bad miss or safety. The next time, only slightly better, the camera started to become just another object in the room. I think overtime, much like playing in front of spectators, the novelty of it wears off and it gets easier to just focus on the match at hand.

I'd like to think the next time I play in front of a camera, I won't be concerned with how anyone perceives my play, but rather just getting the job done whether I play good or bad.

Congrats on 2nd place finish!

As to the streaming problem, it's really only a problem if you make it one. First few times on camera can be unnerving because you tend to focus on the audience instead of the table.

You need to look at what your real goal is. Is it to win the tournament, or is it to impress whatever nobodies might be watching? If the latter, you should know by now that you could play like SVB and there still will be people telling you how bad you played. Trying to impress the audience is a no win situation.

You can't please the audience, so no point even trying to. Just try and please yourself. Even if you lose, did you perform satisfactory for your level of play? That's all you can ask of yourself.

Some good advise so far! Any more comments?

Hi Robert,,,been there done that. In my first successful big tournament, I studied & practiced right up to the night before the tournament. I ran across & very good piece of info...... One shot at a time.

So at every shot, I viewed the challenge. I looked at where the cue ball needed to be at the end of the shot, ready to shoot the next ball. I took a few strokes, making sure of my alignment & then paused. My only concern was to pot the object ball., the other pre-programming was already done.

I wrote in the palm of my hand... "one shot at a time", to remind me of that concept. As I chalked my cue, I could see the inscription. So all I had to do was make one shot at a time. 71 winning games later, I had won the tournament.

Give it a try.

Good Luck...

You're welcome. Several years ago when I was competing full-time, I took a mental toughness training course given by sports psychologist Jim Loehr. When he autographed his book for me, he wrote, "Be the best actor you can be." That wasn't the first time I heard it from someone and it wouldn't be the last. So I'm passing it along to you.

Bob can play, I didnt know this though......

I want a spot next time Bob............... ;)

Ok. I will give you the 8 ball! As long as it is cheap! LOL. I hope things are going good for you. Chuck is a great guy that I am very happy to have met.

$50000
Christmas Day
Race to 500
No restroom breaks
No beverages
No corrective lens
After every break and run, you have to put your forehead on a bat and spin around for 20 seconds
Must consume 15lbs of celery whilst playing

These are my terms, and they are probably negotiable..........

I noticed you have a quote about magic rack being a pattern drill that was quoted from another person. I noticed the magic rack was used for the event. Do you support that thought?

If so, then all you should have to do is learn the patterns of the break better and treat it as a drill when playing a match.

Congrats on 2nd. Steve played very well all week long as well as yourself.

I actually think the magic rack will ruin 9 ball. Its just too easy to make the same wing ball on the break and it becomes boring for the spectators. Nine Ball was once an exciting game since there was uncertainty in making a ball on the break. Now its 99% automatic.
