...or David Howard ?

In 1982, David Howard won the US Open 9-ball.
...in 1986, David Howard aka Squirrel won the US Open 9-ball

I've known David Howard since he was 15...his pool name was Little David....
....not so much for his stature, more because he was a serious action player before
he was old enough to go to high school.
...some writers also called him the Giant Killer...but those are people that coin unearned
nick names and probably need a GPS to find the end rail.

Soooo...who the hell is David Howard aka Squirrel?
( David Howard, btw, is credited with two US Open wins)

pt...inquiring mind

Back in the early 80s, David Howard was considered by many (along with Wade Crane) to have the best nine ball break, one of the first few to break 30 mph on the radar gun.

I didn't see Little David for a few years...he used to have a terrible temper.
He told me that he got sick and tired of acting nasty, so he took up martial arts....
....a friend had told him that they would knock the hell out of him till he stopped getting mad.
....he said he got double lucky...his attitude was much better....and martial arts was
responsible for his new break technique.

I first knew him at the action room in Jacksonville...the great snooker player, Sam
Bluementhal was the house man....Horace the Bookie created a lot of the action.

....there was a cartoon on the wall of a buzzard sitting on a cactus....
...underneath it said "Patience hell ! I'm gonna KILL somethin'."

I live in Ponte Vedra Beach, a suburb of Jacksonville. I moved here in 96 and in 97 met Little David. He owned a pool hall pretty far out on the west side if I remember right. It took me a long time to get there, about 45 minutes.

I used to go many Saturday afternoons and take a lesson from him. Teaching was not his strong suit. I did not learn anything or improve in any area. This is not a knock, just statement of fact.

He was a good guy, interesting and great shot. He once told me, " I held a great stick", as he was running out.:D

Last I saw David was at the Riviera in Vegas at the Camel tour 8 Ball Event. I heard his room closed.

What was the big action room in J Ville? Harley's was suposed to have action but it was not safe to leave my Mercedes in the parking lot with the pimps, whores, dealers and users. I did not go in and noticed on the news a shooting in the parking lot shortly after.

Which room do you refer.

David won US Open two times and was also Runner up two times in the US Open. His nick name in pool was "Giant Killer". There was a WPBA player by name Nikki Bennish from South Carolina. Her nick name in Pool was "Giant Killer". Around 1995, David`s wife wrote to the letters to Editor of a Pool magazine expressing her objection to another player being called "Giant Killer" besides her husband.

Harley's Action Billiards opened long after that other place was gone...I can't remember
the name. Harley would know, he was a regular....also David would know.
I played at Harley's also...they were worried about me stealing THEIR cars...:)
Last time I saw Lori Shampo was at Harley's....knew her from Detroit.

I saw David last at the 2006 Open..(may've been 2002)...his break was no longer awesome.

A friend of mine played David a few times in a weekly 9-ball tournament in the 90s...
...my buddy was a snooker player and could only break about four MPH....
...after one break where he threw everything into it....and cream puffed it again...
...David picked up the cue ball and said " Nothing hit a rail!" ...it was worth the foul...
....everybody cracked up.....:rotflmao1:

To guys from the action years, he will always be 'Little David' Howard....
....we are overruling his old lady......

But the reason I started this thread was....where the hell did 'aka Squirrel' come from?
