To find the problem with pool and americas problem in the mosconi cup one just needs to browse this forum, it quickly becomes clear that it's a mentality.
Pool can't grow cause too many people are only interested in top notch pool and don't support the little man.
The mosconi cup is another example of this. Oh "the race is too short, blah blah blah" well know what it doesn't seem to bother Europe so why does it suck when you lose. A players skill doesn't seem to get called into question unless they lose a match, no one ever either sucks, played bad or just plan got beat. Instead we have proven pros who get's picked apart by individuals who possible never cashed or has a pool related trophy or plaque at home.

Shane pulls out 3 back to back opens and no one says "wow he was great but he needs to work on his stroke or blah". (Well it looks like shane's stroke just got us another life line in the mosconi).

The problem is the mentality plain and simple, that mentality covers your fundamentals, how you handle ups and downs, how you approach situations and your expectations in going into a situation. Other countries are showing this to be true as america gets left behind.

Change the attitude change the outcome.
 
7 of the matches went to the hill. Very close this year even if the overall score doesn't show it right now

The problem is that people aren't realistic.

That and they don't know what they're talking about.

How many of the 7 did USA win? Short race to 5 with alternating breaks is a coin toss.

Last year at Super Billiards Expo in action, I had 8 hill hill matches racing to 7 playing winner break 9 ball. I played very well against strong competition. My losing all 8 hill hill sets I had was an anomoly. So was me going bust for 2k and driving home early Saturday morning! That's pool, sometimes you lose big. I know you can't ever win big unless you put yourself at risk of losing.

Next year I hope Woodward and Bergman are there. No doubt SVB. Who else? Who knows.
 
The problem is the USA players do not gamble against tough spots .
They like the nuts all the time. They're not used to the pressure.
Do I think Taiwan national team or the Philippine national team can beat Europe ?
I think so.

well iguess thay must be better than us at calling heads or tails cause they have sure won a lotta coin tosses the last several years.:D
 
Have to agree

Good matches are seen all over the world not only in Mosconi Cup. Learn to appreciate the gambling matches at your local pool room, these matches are what gets players able to stand up to the pressure of Mosconi Cup, in fact all members of both American / European teams I've observed gambling at one time or another.
 
The scary thing is that Europe didn't even field their best 5 players, and still won 11-7.

Exactly
Plus NVB and Darren were playing below their past performances while USA were playing above their last year's performance . That is scary

Ain't that the truth

There is no problem with pool it's never been a top tier sport / game to begin with
Thinking otherwise is wishful thinking at best and I can't for the life of me understand why that's a big deal or hard to understand
The MC format offers the best viewer game pool has and it can't do better than ESPN 3
Feel lucky it gets that corn hole gets nothing and it dwarfs pool in just a few yrs of existence

I don't get why so many pool players think gambling is the best way to strengthen one's mental game.
That's exactly the mentality that's got the US falling way behind in the pool world. They can keep gambling at the local hole for more and for more money while the Europeans play international events, do drills, refine their fundamentals and work with their coaches and the gap will just get wider and wider every year.

I've seen a few people make this point... and I'm not sure why.

I think there were actually eight matches that went hill-hill, and Europe and the US won four each. It would be one thing if Europe had won every hill-hill match and taken the cup 11-3, although even then I think it could be argued that the Europeans were just stronger under pressure, but if they split the hill-hill matches evenly, then surely the final scoreline is a fair representation of how it went.

I thought it was comfortable for Team Europe. They never lost a day and were never behind after dropping the first team match.

I think it's about time that we let go of the "gambling" notion as it been somewhat proven to not be the key ingredient, I also think that some people need to man up and admit that America is behind and may never be on top again based on the direction the rest of the world is going. America will soon be known as the smoke filled rooms and back alley bars to the rest of the world if we don't kick this stubborn attitude that some of the older heads refuse to let go of and keep holding up back by pumping this garbage into the younger generations head.
We need solid young player that are less influenced by the glamour of old days, quit thinking that there is something to prove on the table about how powerful you are and let solid fundaments and mentality take hold. We need to start pumping out more Skyler and Landon Shuffets, keep Justin away from the heretics.
Stop leaning on Shane so hard, it's not his thing, quit leaning on hasbins sorry Corey but you are not that guy anymore, sure you guys are great players and some clown is going to come out and say "oh you want to play him some" but it's a fact, because you are talented sure you can come with it here and there maybe even win and event like Rodney but let's face it you guys will get eaten alive out there today. Next we need to give up on long shots and hopefuls that don't have the seasoning, aka Dechaine, again great player can come with it "here at home" against equal or similar talent but lack the mentality and true seasoning that is required.
Take a group work with them and they will come through for you, grab you some Sky, Justin, Landon, Oscar and (don't know right now) and hold a camp for these guys just like Wilson did last year, develop these guys cause they seem to hold less of the emotion that is eating away at the others and resulting in us loosing our spot on the main stage be it mosconi or other.
I said my peace, congratulation in advance to EUR on next years mosconi win (ouch... burn)

Most gamblers I know are dead a$$ broke. Pool gamblers included. Now that's pressure right there, trying to support your family at a zero sum game wondering if you are going to feed them steak or stolen ramen noodles that night.

That's pressure, but not the type that succeeds in bettering someone's pool game or life for that matter. It's best not to take financial nor life advice from someone who drives their camaro to their trailer every evening.

I don't get the argument. There are, at least, one million couch quarter backs in America at present who know more about football than any coach or professional player, and not one of them is hurting the NFL in the slightest.

And, unless you have you bridge hand over your eyes, it is obvious that America is not the greatest anymore in the billiards department.
