I am unsophisticated and do not have a rule book and this unusual situation came up during a match I was in last week playing cheap sets.

My opponent was shooting and a 3b that was hanging in a corner pocket away from where he was shooting the 1b just fell in, maybe simply from table vibration or whatever.

So what do the rules state for this situation?

Slightly different but def reminded me of this crazy situation that happened to my fellow Connecticutter, Kevin Guimond, during an impressive comeback he was having against Warren Kiamco a few years ago (keep your eye on the 8b).

In BCA league rules they use a 5 second rule: If it's been 5 seconds and then the ball drops, it is restored. If it's within 5 seconds of the shot that put it there, it counts.

In WPA rules they don't have a specific time count, but if a ball "settles" and drops it is restored.
 
Question: why call yourself unsophisticated? You spell and type better than 99.9% of the posters on here. Maybe "rules challenged" would be a usable term.

The rules deal with both situations.

1.7 Balls Settling
A ball may settle slightly after it appears to have stopped, possibly due to slight imperfections in the ball or the table. Unless this causes a ball to fall into a pocket, it is considered a normal hazard of play, and the ball will not be moved back. If a ball falls into a pocket as the result of such settling, it is restored as closely as possible to its original position. If a settling ball falls into a pocket during or just prior to a shot, and this has an effect on the shot, the referee will restore the position and the shot will be replayed. The shooter is not penalized for shooting while a ball is settling. See also 8.3 Ball Pocketed.

This means that the ref or TD in the Guimond game got the call wrong, at least based on the rules. One could argue that the rule can work an unfairness, because Kevin (with the wisdom of hindsight) when replaying the shot will now not come near the 8. Also, as written, if Kevin had hung the 7 ball and the rest of the shot played out the same, he would get to replay the shot. This would be especially unfair in a call shot game like 10 ball (it would be less unfair in Kevin's situation, because he might have made the 8 and been able to then shoot the 7 and get out).

So what is the correct way to rule this? The shooter gets screwed because if the 8 does not fall until contacted by cue ball he probably does not scratch. Even if they replace the 8 it looks like shooter still gives up table because of foul and incoming player gets BIH. Either way the shooter is screwed because the "settled" and fell.

The correct way to rule this, under WPA rules, is to follow the rule:

"If a settling ball falls into a pocket during or just prior to a shot, and this has an effect on the shot, the referee will restore the position and the shot will be replayed."

The 8 fell into the pocket during the shot, this had an effect on the shot, so the balls are restored and the shooter shoots again.

Anyone know the correct call under BCA? Same as WPA??
