Memorial Tournaments are tournaments which are organized and promoted typically after a person dies.
It seems to me that we should also be interested in honoring those who are still alive. After the person has passed on, we have no way of knowing if they realize the impact that they had on each of us.
I would like to see some interest in having tournaments which honor those who have a positive impact on the pool world and who are still alive.
Names who come to my mind: Billy Incardona, Mark Griffin, Doug Gordon, Efren Reyes, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Barry Hearns, Luke Riches, Buddy Hall, Nick Varner, (well we did have a Nick Varner Annual Classic a couple of years ago in Denver, CO.) etc.
Many of these people wouldn't think of suggesting their names be used but I think it would be very nice to honor them while they are still alive.
What about the industry businesses? There doesn't seem to be many tournaments which are specifically named after industry giants.
What about Diamond Billiards, Simonis, Brunswick, AZ Billiards to name a few. (We've got Mosconi covered but he's been gone for quite some time) I'm not saying to get rid of Memorial tournaments at all......
Please add your own suggestions and ideas. We have all of these tournaments all over the country and I think some individuals and businesses aren't getting all the respect that they deserve.
Do you have any thoughts on this? Is this just a waste of wishful thinking? I don't know if you could classify these type of tournaments with a name. You couldn't call them memorial tournaments......or could you.
