Memorial Tournaments Discussion

Memorial Tournaments are tournaments which are organized and promoted typically after a person dies.

It seems to me that we should also be interested in honoring those who are still alive. After the person has passed on, we have no way of knowing if they realize the impact that they had on each of us.

I would like to see some interest in having tournaments which honor those who have a positive impact on the pool world and who are still alive.

Names who come to my mind: Billy Incardona, Mark Griffin, Doug Gordon, Efren Reyes, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Barry Hearns, Luke Riches, Buddy Hall, Nick Varner, (well we did have a Nick Varner Annual Classic a couple of years ago in Denver, CO.) etc.
Many of these people wouldn't think of suggesting their names be used but I think it would be very nice to honor them while they are still alive.

What about the industry businesses? There doesn't seem to be many tournaments which are specifically named after industry giants.

What about Diamond Billiards, Simonis, Brunswick, AZ Billiards to name a few. (We've got Mosconi covered but he's been gone for quite some time) I'm not saying to get rid of Memorial tournaments at all......

Please add your own suggestions and ideas. We have all of these tournaments all over the country and I think some individuals and businesses aren't getting all the respect that they deserve.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Is this just a waste of wishful thinking? I don't know if you could classify these type of tournaments with a name. You couldn't call them memorial tournaments......or could you.

Agreed

JoeyA,
I can agree with that. I don't think it would be a bad thing to recognize someone/honor someone with a tournament held in their name it would be an Honor. However what would you propose that an event like this cost the venue? There is always details. I'd love to see it done but pool players are pool players and they are interested in money. This sort of thing should also be a reward for the room owner that would host these events.

There doesn't have to be any additional cost involved. Tournament names are just that, names. I'm just saying that it would be nice to consider naming the events after people who have made a positive impact on the pool world and who are still alive.

Honor doesn't have to cost money.

Memorial Tournaments

The place is in North Carolina its called Chandleys, Chalk and Cue it will hold 900 people it has 16 Diamond Pro Am tables and 37 7ft Diamonds. Full Bar, Full Kitchen and affordable hotels within 2 to 3 miles. It can accommodate quite a crowd. The location is central to a lot of places. I would think if there were a movement to do this that something could be worked out. Sort of sounds like a great event to me.

Memorial tournaments

I help run the 4 Bears Golf tournament also, 5 years ago our committee started honoring a golfer or local athlete who golfed who is living, and if that year a golfer pasted away we also honor them at our tourney. We thought the same thing, why wait till they are gone.. we have boards made up with their picture on it and accomplishments and bio . We put the boards up on diffrent tee boxes for golfers to read.

The name of the tournament doesnt have to change .but it's a good thing and I think pool should start it too.

Yes Ray, it really makes sense to me too. I'm glad someone else thinks it's a nice idea to honor people while they are still alive.

I know you and the others do a lot of work to organize, promote and run the 4 Bears Casino Annual event and want to publicly thank you and all of the others who do so much to put on such a great tournament.

A separate HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS is due for making The 4 Bears 8 Ball Classic a MOSCONI CUP POINTS EVENT! $28,000.00 OF ADDED MONEY is substantial for a 4 day tournament.

I think about people like Charlie Brown, a guy who enjoys the role of Calcutta buyer at White Diamonds semi-annual tournaments. This guy and a few other guys who bid heavy in the Calcutta help make that tournament one of the best weekend tournaments in the country.

There are many others who deserve recognition and appreciation. What about the live streamers who have paved the way for us to watch these great events at home, when we are unable to attend?

Why wait until a person has passed on to show them honor and respect?

Oh, yeah, White Diamonds weekend bar table tournament is April 2-3.

Joey, totally agree with your concept. Guys like Charlie Brown, have done more to promote pool than most manufacturers could ever do!..He was a long time stakehorse for me (so you know he had a ton of gamble :p) More importantly, he became a lifelong friend..He was best man at my wedding, and we are still in touch 55 yrs. later!.. Too bad he lost Dorothy, quite a while back..She was a great soulmate to him. :(

It's a small world.

Dick,

I had no idea that you two were friends, let alone such good friends.

Now I can get all of the scuttlebutt on you from back in the day.

Joey, If you run into him anywhere, I have not been able to reach him by phone lately..Been about 6 mos. since we last talked..See if he has a new number?..I assume he still lives in his old house in Henderson..Sure hope he's OK..He's gotta be pushing 90!..Thanks.

PS... Do you know Mike James, (formerly Shreveport, now lives in Carthage,TX).. He and I and Charlie were always close mutual friends, he doesn't have a current number for him either.

Just a nod here to tournament directors who are the unsung heroes of our game. Whether they are holding Mosconi Cup point events, 128-person bar-table events, or 32-person weekly 9-ball tournaments, it's these guys (ladies) who keep a very important part of the pool ecosystem alive. They create foot traffic for rooms, put up with an immeasurable amount of BS, and don't get compensated all that well for their effort

And I very much agree that memorial tournaments held in the honor of past as well as present figures is a fantastic idea.

I will get you what you seek on April 2 & 3rd 2016.

Best regards,
JoeyA

Let's show some love while they are still alive.

I like the way you think Vivian.

You know, tournament names can even have sub-names, kind of like sub-forums (inside joke).

Tournament directors are sometimes castigated in spite of their generous under appreciated and underpaid work that they do for us.

What's wrong with "Insert Name" Super Bowl 9 Ball Open tournament?

Here's a quick and simple example. Every First Saturday of the month Buffalo's Billiards has a C & D players tournament. This month they are opening it up to "A" players. Jimmy, always gives the players the best of any pool event so I added his name to the tournament flyer. No cost involved, just honoring someone's name

I didn't get his permission so I might have overstepped my limits but hey, that's the way I roll.
