BCA Rule Question on Jumping.

I've always read that when jumping, you are required to DRIVE the cue ball into the cloth causing it to rebound up into the air. I have noticed, at several of our Tourneys, some are addressing the cue ball below the mid line/center of the cue ball. I believe this is a Foul due to the fact you can not DRIVE the cue ball into the cloth at that cue angle. I believe that it is a scoop, even if the Cue is jacked up. Thoughts, or can someone post the rule? Thanks all, Brian.

Sounds legal, I don't think you can scoop the ball with the cue jacked up.

If you have the butt raised then it's possible to hit below the equator and have the resultant force on the ball, even when accounting for deflection, be down into the table. As long as the natural pivot point is higher than center ball I think the force ends up being downward. The foul comes in when your tip winds up touching the table and the ball at the same time. Which now that I think about it would raise the "effective end mass" of the cue by a couple hundred pounds.

It is a foul if a player strikes the cue ball below center (“digs under” or “lofts” the cue ball) and intentionally causes it to rise off the bed of the table in an effort to clear an obstructing ball. Such jumping action may occasionally occur accidentally, and such “jumps” are not to be considered fouls on their face; they may still be ruled foul strokes, if for example, the ferrule or cue shaft makes contact with the cue ball in the course of the shot.

3.27 JUMP SHOTS
Unless otherwise stated in rules for a specific game it is legal to cause the cue ball to rise off the bed of the table by elevating the cue stick on the shot, and forcing the cue ball to rebound from the bed of the table. Any miscue when executing a jump shot is a foul.

In the past year on ESPN Shane, Darren, and Allison Fisher all had terrible moments while trying to draw the ball causing the cue ball to go airborne. In Allison's and Shane's case, the object ball was still made and their inning continued. But clearly, and even from the sounds, the ferrule came in contact was the cue ball was scooped. Yet no foul was called.

I have wondered about this until I read 3.26 just now "Such jumping action may occasionally occur accidentally, and such “jumps” are not to be considered fouls on their face"

That explains the no foul.
