What kind of chalk do you use?

I use Magic and it is great. I have also heard some good things about LAVA chalk, but have not tried it yet. I ordered some yesterday, here is the link:

Has anyone tried LAVA chalk and how does it perform?

As I posted, I used Lava for awhile. Went through 3-4 cubes. I thought it was okay but not great. Chris Renfro has tested a lot of chalk under the microscope and has mentioned that Lava is one of the most abrasive chalks.

I use Masters have never really tried anything besides those crappy silver cup we got for free. On my second box of masters chalk and I have no complaints. This might be a stupid question but what is preFlag Masters I keep seeing people here mention that over the last year and iv never been quite sure,

Did they change something they did in the past and the flag is a way to tell when they were made?

Blue Diamond........I chalk every other shot as my routine and Blue Diamond works as well as any other chalk when you chalk often.......with Blue Diamond, every other shot chalking works great.....zero miscues.

Yes, they made changes a few years back, and added the Flag. Some folks prefer the Pre-Flag, because of the "so called" formula change. Do a search on AZB, you'll find lots of older post's on the subject.

I use Magic, and would also like to try the Great White.

What kind of chalk do you use and why? I had used Predator chalk for awhile but switched back to Masters because I found the Predator to messy.

For the past year or so I've been going ape s**t crazy over the Predator chalk.
Love that thing.
I play with hard tips and at last found a nice sticky chalk that doesn't just stick to the cue ball, like Blue Diamond....in my experience...and I never miscue with Predator.

So......Predator all the way for me.....all subject to change of course.

You'll never catch me riding the "OMG - which chalk is best!?" train. I'll always be found, safe & sound, on the Master's Express.

I use Magic Chalk. When I run out of Magic.....it will be a long time.....ill probably use up the rest of the Blue Diamond unless I give it away like all of my other chalks. Magic Chalk isn't messy at all and come off of my ferrule better than any other. It also helps that I use juma ferrules. I like a really clean ferrule.

Masters, but I always bring my own. It's night and day difference between what I get at the pool hall. My theory?

My own chalk sits in my climate controlled workshop, 70 degrees, 35% to 45% humidity. When it comes in, I leave the box out for a couple of weeks, and then I seal it in a Ziploc bag. When it sits in my case, it sits in a plastic ziplock bag. My chalk is DRY.

Pool hall chalk? It sits out, and all the air conditioning/heating/whatever gets turned off when they close for the night. In most parts of the country, that means it's going to be sitting in a high humidity environment for a significant portion of the time, and it's going to get a little humid.

My Masters is bright blue, clean and goes on beautifully. Their masters is dull looking and applies kind of randomly.

Again, just my opinion, but I've been carrying my own chalk for over 20 years and it's always been the same, flag or no flag. If you don't like Masters, at least be sure to order some fresh chalk and bring your own before dismissing it. :)

If I ever see someone with a cube of Magic chalk, I'll give it a try.

But according to Skip Nemecek, Tweeten CEO, they didn't change the formula, and they still produce packages with no flag. It's all a big myth.

Skip insists there is absolutely ZERO difference in the formulation of pre- and post-flag Masters chalk. The flag was simply added as a tribute to 9/11, nothing more. But people will convince themselves and believe what they want to.

I recently started using sky blue Master chalk. It was recommended by our local pool room owner as being superior to the other Master colors. I agree that it seems to do a better job of providing an even, reasonably thick coverage of the tip. Better than traditional blue or the gold I had been using. It costs the same as the other Master chalk colors.

Magic now, although to be hones, I chalk before every shot, so if you secretly switched my chalk with a Masters I don't think I would notice.

You would notice. Just look at how much chalk would come off of your tip with Masters compared to Magic.

I use whatever chalk is available (usually Master) because if you chalk before each shot, it really doesn't matter (although, the new/fancy/expensive "sticky" chalks can cause more-frequent cling, which is not a good thing). For more info, see:

Ask SVB about that, he just chalked up, and then miscued in a tourney not to long ago. And you can see he did NOT hit the table first, or do anything out of the ordinary. It was a very EASY shot.....with not much distance between cb and ob.

Actually, I see that in league way too often. SVB looked around like, "hey, I just chalked it", almost cost him the match. But hey, if he likes his Masters he can keep his Masters ;)

Could be his tip, yep, maybe. But the "good" stuff will work better on a crappy tip as well

Might want to try a Ki-tech tip now as well... friend got one, and it plays very nice. As good as any tip I've tried to date. Maybe SVB should get one too ;)

Is this the Magic Chalk yall are talking about?

https://youtu.be/XXjaGOqYyK8

Yes, yes it is. That was me on the left ;)

Yeah, saw that before, kinda funny. back from 2010 though, not sure how much MC was circulating back then.... but they don't even know there is a chalk called "magic chalk"... I don't think they play much pool either... but in their defense, I saw NO miscues ;)

Magic for now.

I got back in the pool game 4 years ago and shoot almost daily on my 9' table. I used Blue Master Chalk and it works well. A friend gave me a bunch of Silver Cup and it works ok and I used Blue Diamond for a couple of years and like it.

All of them seem to work well on the Kamui Black soft and medium tips I have on my Diviney Lake Salvage shafts. A few months ago a friend talked me into trying Kamui Chalk and it works very well, but it is the messiest chalk I have used and the cost makes no sense to me.

After reading Dr. Dave's chalk testing article I picked up some Magic Chalk and I have found a new favorite chalk. It stays on the tip very well and does not leave a mess on my table and balls as compared to other chalks. That and the cost, 2 cubes under 8 bucks is reasonable to me.

I shot 9 Ball for 4 hours with a friend yesterday and chalked the Samsara Break Tip once and did not chalk it again and had no miscues and chalked once every other rack on my playing shaft with no miscues, just to see what would happened, so it definitely performed well. When I play in a tournament in a couple of weeks I will use Magic Chalk, but I will chalk more often, just in case.

So for now I will use Magic Chalk when ever I am playing some one and use up my other stuff when practicing alone. But, if a decent player is chalking regularly most of the chalk I listed works "good enough".

I am curious to see how long it takes for Magic Chalk to have a significant price increase. Just saying.......
