What kind of chalk do you use?

I got back in the pool game 4 years ago and shoot almost daily on my 9' table. I used Blue Master Chalk and it works well. A friend gave me a bunch of Silver Cup and it works ok and I used Blue Diamond for a couple of years and like it.

All of them seem to work well on the Kamui Black soft and medium tips I have on my Diviney Lake Salvage shafts. A few months ago a friend talked me into trying Kamui Chalk and it works very well, but it is the messiest chalk I have used and the cost makes no sense to me.

After reading Dr. Dave's chalk testing article I picked up some Magic Chalk and I have found a new favorite chalk. It stays on the tip very well and does not leave a mess on my table and balls as compared to other chalks. That and the cost, 2 cubes under 8 bucks is reasonable to me.

I shot 9 Ball for 4 hours with a friend yesterday and chalked the Samsara Break Tip once and did not chalk it again and had no miscues and chalked once every other rack on my playing shaft with no miscues, just to see what would happened, so it definitely performed well. When I play in a tournament in a couple of weeks I will use Magic Chalk, but I will chalk more often, just in case.

So for now I will use Magic Chalk when ever I am playing some one and use up my other stuff when practicing alone. But, if a decent player is chalking regularly most of the chalk I listed works "good enough".

I am curious to see how long it takes for Magic Chalk to have a significant price increase. Just saying.......

I agree with everything except the break cue chalk. I have a Taom tip on my breaker, and the chalk is gone after one shot, every-time, without fail. It's one hard ass tip.

Also, If they raise the price of Magic Chalk, then they can keep it.... it's already way overpriced. I'll just go back to Blue Diamond.

I had laser eye surgery 6 years ago and found out that the master chalk I was using dusted off when hitting the cue ball putting chalk dust in the air and severely irritating my eyes. Blue Diamond pretty much solved the problem of constant use of eye drops. Kamui works but is a horrible greasy mess and outrageously priced. I switched to Magic chalk months ago and can't see myself changing. Its clean, inexpensive and works extremely well. Other players here feel the same.

Ask SVB about that, he just chalked up, and then miscued in a tourney not to long ago. And you can see he did NOT hit the table first, or do anything out of the ordinary. It was a very EASY shot.....with not much distance between cb and ob.

Actually, I see that in league way too often. SVB looked around like, "hey, I just chalked it", almost cost him the match. But hey, if he likes his Masters he can keep his Masters ;)

Could be his tip, yep, maybe. But the "good" stuff will work better on a crappy tip as well

Might want to try a Ki-tech tip now as well... friend got one, and it plays very nice. As good as any tip I've tried to date. Maybe SVB should get one too ;)

Not more than a week or two ago, I was watching Rodney Morris play Oscar Dominguez in the finals of whatever tournament they had free streaming for and Rodney miscued severely on a straight in and then Oscar later won the set. I think if Rodney had not miscued he may have won. That miscue seemed to screw his mind up and he shot worse for the rest of the match.

I use the Magic Chalk also and have for a few months or more. It seems to have a bit more grip and adheres to my tip better than Masters.

I use whatever is provided. Used to have a Predator chalk in my case for emergencies, but I lost it somehow. I'll get another one if the climate gets really humid, like it did last summer.

Agree with the OP about Predator being messy - especially down the shaft after a long session. Currently using Diamond, which seem to cover the tip easily and is not as messy! Masters brown on the back up cue works just fine. But hay, I'm a chalk slut.

Masters. Its cheap and popular. I was using the gold/tan and always thought it was very hard and difficult to put on. Now, I switched to blue with my new table and it is way easier to apply and way messier. Was the gold/tan just old or something? I NEVER noticed the gold/tan on my hands and stuff, with the blue I have to wash my hands once in awhile to stay clean! If somebody wants me to try other brands, send me some! I will eval and report back!

I currently use Predator's chalk, but it is indeed very messy. Makes me want to go back to Masters. Predator's chalk applies soooo well though.

I agree with this statement above in red! But, i truly believe it is more about the "METHOD" of application then the product!!!

If you are anal and precise in "APPLICATION" the results will far exceed those that aren't!!!

You have to work and practice applying chalk in my opinion! Just like people practice racking and their break. You must visually inspect your tip for "bald" spots and adequately use a tip scuffer. Applying any product on a "UNPREPARED" surface is going to result in a poor outcome.

In my opinion, The predator chalk works better for me! But, why??? I think the shape of the cube is a bit more natural and comfortable and results in a better "APPLICATION" of the product on the tip.

Some use chalk cases and holders that improve their grip and application and some are slippery and deteriorate the effectiveness of the application process. I highly suggest experimenting with various chalkers and cubes to evaluate how "EFFECTIVE" you are with the various cubes and chalk holders.

Just my 2 cents!

I had been using Predator, and like it well enough. I picked up a piece of Magic and really like that. I have a Great White that I plan on trying out once this cube of Magic is done.

After that, I'll probly use up what I have left of the Predator, then I'll decide whether I liked the Great White or Magic better and go with that. At my current rate of play versus the much less I use with the new formulas, that might not be until next year :p

Master Chalk. It's cheap and does its job.

In case you haven't noticed..this is what makes up some of the most boring topics ever discussed on this forum!..The only thing more exciting is, 'what kind of wrap do you prefer'?..Puhleeeeze, give it a rest!.. Who could possibly care? :boring2: :boring2: :boring2:

PS..Lets talk about ACTION..Whos playing who, etc!..Or maybe we could talk about different pool ball colors..Anything would be a step up, from talking about f-ing chalk! :(

The subject of the thread is, "what kind of chalk do you use."

Or maybe we could talk about different pool ball colors.

I think the Hyatt-Albany Billiard Ball Company had the best colors. The baby blue, green and purple were great! :nanner::nanner::nanner:
