why must all billiard games, atleast all ive seen, start with the same 3 cushion shot?
, im just curious, ive seen 3c,1c,free game, balkline, 4ball all open with the same break


the only rule is to play first red; but look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NLmGge2IJ4 ,


so i guess the standard shot is probably the easiest to make, if not wouldnt more people be doing whats shown on the vid

and thats no 10fter

Hoppe recommended a different opening shot for the small games. It was off the other side of the red ball and with a little reverse follow for two cushions. It may have worked better with ivory balls. In Hoppe's time the spot for the breaker's cue ball was in a slightly different position.

But is that the golden rule though? Off the red first, then it's anything you want? Id like to just try a few different ways personally

The official UMB rules are available on-line. Article 23, paragraph 3 states for all carom (3-ball) games:

3. The starting cannon must be played by direct attack on the red ball. ​

Somewhere out there is a youtube video of the break shot being made in about 20 different ways, sometimes with 3 cushions and sometimes with less. If I run across it again I'll post the link. I think you would like it.
