Tom Wirth: Controlled Aggression review

I wish to thank you all for your contributions to this thread. Thanks to GC for posting it, and thanks also to English, HawaiianEye, and pocketpooler for providing so many others an incentive to chime in defending my book. I loved it all. In less than a single day my book got lots of exposure and a number of sales to boot! Thanks to you bbb and you Alphadog for your generous offer to reimburse English should he buy but not appreciate. Now that's confidence, belief, and support. However I doubt he would accept or expect reimbursement. I don't know him but I think he is bigger than that. It's all good.

Ain't pool great!? Without the negative there can be no positive, and to the rest of you who I have not mentioned by name, you showed you had my back. What could be better than that!

Thanks to you all. You made my day!

Tom

Below is the Accu-Stats review.

"NEW!!! BK* OP: One Pocket:
A Game of Controlled Aggression
By Tom Wirth
When you hear the “Voice of Accu-
Stats,” Billy Incardona announce on
live TV, that this tome is the best
book on 1-Pocket available, one
must pay attention. Then, when it
arrives and Scott Frost, Shannon
Daulton, and Brandon Shuff have
adorned the back cover with their affirmations, one must
delve deeper. With actual photographs, Tom asks you to
analyze each “situation” and think outside of the box. He
then offers reasonable options and, just when you feel
pleased that you had thought of one of them, in the next
paragraph, he drops the optimum “Move” on you. Whamo!
You’re trapped! As Wirth explains, “One Pocket is all about
finding ways to better your position or diminish even the
slightest advantage your opponent may hold.” The book
offers opening, mid-game, end-game situations, take-out
shots, end-game offense, moving multiple balls, drills, a
strategic blunder from a great player, and much more. It’s
spiral bound to spread for easy set-up to practice the situations
on the pool table. 210 oversized, color pages:

How can you say $60 is a lot for a book, when you don't know what's in the book? That's like saying $100,000 is a lot for a car, then that car turns out to be a new Ferrari that's worth $300,000.

The fact that you even mention sales pitch and bs is completly out of line. I guess everybody thats reviewed/used the book is full of bs too. Shame on you!
Jason

Btw, you cannot have an "opinion" about the cost of the book without reviewing it. What is your "opinion" based on? Nothing, is what its based on. Do you realize how stupid that is?

I could not have said it better. thanks Jason. It is impossible to have an objective opinion on value without first understanding the product.

Thank you Tim. I'm looking forward to playing and meeting all these greats from my generation and slightly before. I know I'm going to have a wonderful time. I think I understand it right that there will be live streaming of a few of the matches. You might want to check it out.

Tom

I just have to say this one more time: the quality of the paper, color photo illustrations, the fact that the book is spiral bound, all this makes for an expensive book. If you then look at Tom's experience in One Pocket and his reputation in the pool community, $60 really is not all that much to pay for what you get. If you don't buy it, it's just your loss.

It is pretty simple. If you think the price of the book is too high, don't buy it.

If you feel like you cannot learn anything from the book, don't buy it.

With that being said, this is one of the best investments I have made in my pool game. My one pocket game has skyrocketed from reading this book. I have always been a pretty good ball runner. Not moving well has kept me from winning against guys who I shoot as well as who move better. The book has shown me many simple alternatives to shots I had been playing incorrectly.

I have won close to $400 in the past month playing 10-20 a game giving or receiving same weight that had been a fair game or I was a loser in before I bought this book.

The old saying "You don't know what you don't know" is perfect for this book.

PS. If you buy the book and don't get anything out of it (which I highly doubt), there will be people more than willing to take it off your hands.

Sometimes the negativity on AZB is too much to bear. Listen Tom wrote a book about One Pocket and whether people think it is not worth the price is not a justification to knock the effort Tom put forth to bring the complexities of the game into print. This was no easy task. It takes a lot of effort to do so. Tom is a very accomplished player and author. That combination is hard to find. So just enjoy his mentoring and philosophy of the game and attempt to improve your skill set.

I wish we could put an end to the bickering. My only issue was in reference to a statement suggesting that the price of my book was too high. I took objection to this comment because this gentleman knows nothing about my book other than it is an informative tome about the game of One Pocket. He knows nothing of the quality within. To make statements like that in my opinion is uncalled for and of no useful purpose. I would have had great respect for his statement if he had mentioned he had seen and read the book, and from that knowledge, formed his conclusion. This was not the case.

This is what started the taking of sides. If you noticed, those in support of the book are those who have copies and have read and prospered from it. English, to suggest those in support of my book are, in some way "yes men" who's opinions are diminished because you think they blindly "support a product, any product" can be construed as being very offensive.

Tom

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Sir,

I was NOT referring to ALL those that support your book nor did I refer to anyone as "yes men" as the quotes suggests.

I have no issue with your book or you. I hope you got to read my post suggesting how to handle 'objections' regarding price before this thread was augmented.

If not, I would be more than willing to PM it to you . Let me know if you are interested.

Nothing but Best Wishes for You & Yours,
Rick

Weird, my non-inflammatory post seems to have disappeared.

In any case, here's the gist. I'm going slowly through the book so I'm only about 1/4 through it. I've learned lots of good general 1P thoughts and I've already learned two specific new shots that are likely to be valuable. One of those turned around a $20 game, meaning a $40 swing. So the net price of the book for me is already down to $20, and will soon be negative!

Therefore, if you play me or might play me someday, then please do not read this terrible book! If you do not fit into that category, then I strongly recommend it to you!

Pretty sure there was another thread sometime earlier.

I'd like to hear from guys like myself.....new to the game....not a lot of competition with stronger players. Can run out occasionally. If I had to rate myself today I'd say I'm C player and growing. I have a lot to learn. Make mistakes, miss shots, leave banks..../...... can have good days where I feel confident with what I have for now. When I started to play I had no idea of what and where to start in a game but now have a foundation thanks to TW and his book. How are you doing at this stage and when did you take 1P seriously.

The book is excellent at conveying major one pocket concepts. It helps the reader understand "why" a shot is the best choice!

Game strategy is very important concept. The book is much different from power one pocket and is more than a bunch of shots.

Just my 2 cents!

PS. I got my monies worth and then some!

To the uninitiated that play the uninitiated it may seem a simple game. Then one day you play a true student of the game & spend all day long trying to escape Nellies Kitchen where he keeps putting you & at that moment the epiphany that there may be more to this game than meets the eye reveals itself. At that moment stroke Tom Tom a check for $60, it will be the best $ you ever spent.

Exactly. I was playing daily with 2 guys. None of us knew any moves as we'd keep shooting balls down table. The game went on and on over and over. It was fun but unexciting. An occasional bank., luck shot and so on. I decided to take lesson and see what happens. Azb member bbb recommends Tom Wirth. I take 1 lesson and I'm hooked(no pun). It became a weekly endeavor. Before and after the lesson Tom would show me a project he was working on (Controlled Aggression). It is a master piece. I go one page at a time and work on the situation. If I don't understand something I call or have Tom review with it me in person. To anyone that has the book I'm sure Tom would take your call or email to critique. Tom is the real deal. After the sale it's the service that counts. He'll be there for you. He's a true teacher.
Tom's book is Tom. It represents his heart and soul. It's his life work. He's passing it on.

Oh you don't have to point out to me that Tom Tom is for real. In from Maryland & so was he for a long time before moving down your way. Everyone around here that knows & plays the game has either been victimized or watched someone get victimized by the genius of his game. You have a great instructor.

Hi. Was just trying to reinforce/encourage others to get their hands on CA. You already know the truth. Tom aka Mr 8nOut.
Your post spells it out. The book is obviously worth more. The people that do not buy it have no interest to improve or work at it. Has nothing to do with the price.
Studying each page is sort of like learning to play an instrument. The book shows how to play the notes correctly. How to produce music not noise.

I miss hangin out with Tom too, took a few lessons from him(i'm still a 9 baller at heart) but more than that, just a great guy to be around.

Gonna really dig into the book when I get back home after Expo - at 45 I think I might be old enough for 1P now :)
